The elf didn't move, didn't want to. Those were the sort of cries one ran away from, not valiantly rushed into. That behavior was left for the foolhardy heroes that never lived long. Kaine's long fingers wrapped themselves around the strap to his quiver, white-knuckled from the intensity of the grasp. His breath seemed drawn from him, magnetically attracted to the chilling cries of a man facing his own demise, leaving no air in his lungs for his own usage. He watched the others hurry upward, running to rescue a creature in agony. A sort of cowardice resulting from caution dragged his feet backwards.
Kaine winced at the creaking of planks above him. Alone there he may have been safe, but he wasn't about to let a bunch of kids get beaten up while he slunk away to hide amidst salted fish and stale biscuits. With the urging of honor that he couldn't shake despite all his attempts, he slunk up the stairs, his back to the wall and his ears alert, listening for anything that could signal a chance for escape.
