((This is a thread that died at my old place, was a great idea that snapped out of my head, but sadly it died when one of the major characters stopped playing. Hopefully with an active group we can keep it going? First post is a bit long. Lots of set-up!))
“God, someone help me! AHHHH!!!!!!!!!!”
The sound of screams rang out over the night like nails on a chalkboard. Such was life in Varamen. Cities that live in anarchy are only safe to those who can defend themselves. The blood spilled is more often than not that of the innocent. For those with no one to protect them, if they cannot protect themselves, life is a harsh, and short experience. This young woman was no exception. Behind her ran a crazed madman, blind with bloodlust, he ran after her with a horrid grin on his face, and a red eye tattooed to his forehead. She could only run for so long before her fate was written. The man overcame her, raped her, and then ate her.
In the recent months, a new problem arose in Varamen. For the most part, it was often a dangerous place, but never was the dangers there organized. Theft, murder, rape, it found its way into a city that lacked an organized government. A breeding ground for the dregs of society, some people had no chance, or will to leave. The only thing that protected them was the strength of their own arms, or the will of a few good men and women. Although, the righteous rarely lasted in Varamen. Such a place existed for the sole purpose of being a hellhole. Those who stood up to defend those who needed it, or to clean the filth from the populace, found themselves outnumbered, and eventually, slain.
But, the current events were nothing like normal. There was an organized group, which was rumored as being a cult, one that took pride in the worst atrocities that could be committed. And in a place like Varamen, finding recruits was easier than it should be. But still, for humans, elves, dwarves, all the races, to willfully rape, destroy, and cannibalize. Many expected there were forces at work, a cult, so to speak…
For most, Varamen was the only home they had, a city that was so vast that those who tried to see all of it would likely find themselves aged before they could. Getting out of Varamen was out of the question. The wilderness was at times more dangerous than the city itself, so only those brave, or stupid, souls who dared venture outside the walls did… None are ever heard from again, whether they escape and never return, or find their end in the wild, one can only guess.
But for every action of evil, every cult of the d**ned that rises from the dregs of society, there is an equal and opposite reaction of righteousness. Rarely in Varamen did this reaction amount to change, or to a step toward a civil society, but, there were those willing to fight for what remnants of good and right existed in the torn city….
Varamen, much like many other cities of the time, was run only by the strong, only by who could survive. But none had ever seen chaos such as this. Any place with enough order to build a wall at one point, and then lose that order... So, the few beings who tried to survive, tried to do good, or did the evil that corrupted the place so, were now those in control.
There was no room for error in this life, any lapse of judgement was room for the maniacs that lived in this place to take a life. That was why places such as Bernie's existed. A small pub with attached rooms that was safeguarded from the outside world. Only a few such establishments existed in the sprawling hell of this massive city. This one on the east side, Bernie's was run by Bernie Gertman, a old soldier, hard-nosed and tough as hell. He wasn't young enough to fight anymore, so he knew exactly who to go to.
The reasons for the chaos of Varamen to be left at the door were two men. One of them was Galius Vansen. Galius, a muscular, but skinny man, was known well in the area, and any person who didn't know him knew well not to cause trouble at Bernie's. Galius was quick as lightning, and ruthless as the monsters around the city. Bernie didn't know what to think of him, but he knew Galius was the type of man needed for the job. He could never tell if Galius fought because he wanted to, or because he was paid well. Galius was a mystery, not only to his employer, but to his co-worker.
Galius stood about 5'11'', weighing around 150 lbs. He was not large, but was very fast. Hanging at his waist were two longswords, and on his back was a longbow. He had a cowboy hat on his head that sheilded his eyes from the large firepit providing light in the middle of the room. The only thing that could be seen of his face was his rough stubble of his black beard. He was wearing a leather jacket, and a pair of black jeans, his shirt was a white cloth shirt, nothing someone would remember. He stood at the door, watching the room, and inspecting anyone that entered the place. Surprisingly, this bar was a place that many of the women in the area came, the safety from the hell of outside was nice, and in such a horrible existence, finding a "partner" for the night was something both genders were hunting.
It was a abnormal night, nobody of note had come through the door, a few regulars, and a few new faces, but it had been uneventful. Bernie walked to the end of the bar and looked over at Galius, who had yet to move all night.
"Slow night, eh Galius?" The old man with a gruff voice said.
"Yea..." Galius responded, the low pitch of his voice ringing out like a bell, and carrying across the room. Everyone stopped and looked over. The regulars knew Galius, but they never heard him talk, nor had Bernie. The shock across the room was shared by about half the room, the other half was confused. Bernie smiled and returned to making drinks, the fact that over the past year he had finally heard Galius respond was enough for him. But, the quiet of the night was broken when a pair of loud large men burst through the door. They were screaming laughing, before Bernie yelled out.
"Hey, you *ssholes better learn that this place isn't one for you to wander in like a bunch of common thugs!" Bernie howled.
The two looked up at Bernie, who pointed to Galius, who hadn't looked up. The two men laughed, and sat down, quieting down for the moment. Over the course of the night, they got slowly louder, until a woman at the bar caught their eye. She was a stunning blonde, and the two men reached over and grabbed her, already moving toward the door. But when they turned around, a blade was at their neck, and the fiery red eyes of Galius were staring right at them. The man without the blade to his neck grabbed Galius' wrist, twisting the blade away, only to find his hand severed by Galius' other arm, holding the other longsword. Pulling his arm free he slammed the blade into the neck of the first man, and the one with the woman in his arms let go of her. As she scrambled away, he backed up, staring at his friend who had fallen to the ground, the blade still lodged in his neck. The man pulled out a handaxe, and stared at Galius.
"You're gonna die tonight, skinny boy!" The fat man yelled. He lept forward, aiming to strike Galius with the axe, but before he could, a swift strike left his head rolling along the ground. Galius turned around, ripping his blade from the corpse below him, the spill of blood didn't even touch him, and he walked to the door, leaning in his old spot. Bernie looked over to Galius and shook his head. Of the two guards, Galius was the one who never gave anyone a second chance, which explained why more regulars came in on Galius' nights. Someone raised hell on Galius' night, and he was dead. Forman, the other guard, often made his point, and let the offender live.
The young boy from the back came out with a bucket and mop, and began to clean up the mess. Bernie threw the parts of the men outside, to show to others what happens to those that enter here with bad intentions.
The dull roar of the bar began again, as things returned to abnormal...

Mammoth smiled and walked over to Talin, he was beaten up a bit, and in quite a bit of pain, but nothing he hadn't faced before. He gave Talin a slap on the back and offered his hand to him.
"Couldn't 'a done it without ya." He said.
Finally, as the chants wore on, he laughed and howled out,
"Cheer for ya'selves, dammit! Ya did all the work!" He laughed, as did the men. He headed off to find Pinata and tell him the same he told Talin, and then to look for the rest of his allies... No... Friends. It had been a long time since he had traveled anything but alone, and it felt good to finally be invigorated in the heat of battle, and to feel the strength of the brotherhood that was built on the battlefield. He looked around for Pinata, and made his way from the ravine...

Mammoth could see the men breaking, the defense at the ravine had held. Now all that was left was to finish what they had started. Mammoth stepped back and pulled his blade, watching as the men from the battle behind them moved to the edges of the ravine and rained arrows on the now retreating Starj forces. Mammoth stepped forward, raised his blade into the air, and roared out.
"CHARGE!" And he broke into a dead sprint, blasting piles of dead bodies out of his way, not even taking the time to jump over them. The enemy soldiers were pelted by corpses, and knocked to the ground, and every one that got near him was cut down with a swift strike from Mammoth's massive blade. He needed to beat them to the other side of the ravine, and stop them from retreating. He knew he was taking danger on by running into his own men's fire, but it was a chance he had to take. He wasn't about to let these men escape. This battle had to be won by letting no man live... He was hit by a few arrows, a few glanced off his armor, but one pierced through and hit him in the side.
As he ran in front of the remaining fleeing troops, at least the ones that had not made it from the ravine, he saw the remaining Korgasa forces rounding up and cutting down the fleeing Starj soldiers. Mammoth stopped, spinning around and holding his ground at the only exit from the ravine. He watched as the fleeing men began to slow and even stop, knowing their doom was coming. He finally smirked and stepped forward, and with one massive swing, cut down the entire front line.
The Starj forces were broken, and they had no escape, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Mammoth stepped forward, repeating his attack, and again mowing down any too scared to duck or run. Soon enough, the ravine, which had become a pool of blood nearly 6 inches deep, was filled with nothing but corpses and the victorious Korgasa soldiers. Mammoth breathed heavily, he was winded. He had taken quite a beating, and it was no surprise, he was the centerpoint of the battle, and stood out the most, they went for him, thinking if they brought him down they would face far less opposition. However, He knew Pinata and Talin were the reason they won this battle, and the ferocity of his men.
Raising his sword above his head, he roared out,
"VICTORY IS OURS!"

Mammoth stood to the middle, held his sword out to his side, and grinned.
"And to think... I thought this was gonna be tough." He said, smiling as he took the middle.
The men attacking were now charging, Mammoth waited, and watched, seeing their zeal, but lack of thought. He pulled back his blade and sliced forward, cutting down a good five men before pulling back his blade. They continued to charge, and he continued to hack away, taking care not to swing too far to the sides, and take out his own allies. As the men charged, they began to have to climb over the corpses of their own, allowing for easy targets. Mammoth didn't waste the chance, and continued the make the corpses pile up with swift strikes from his blade.
But before long, they had gotten close, and such a battle in close quarters would make it too hard to use his blade without fear of taking out his own men. So he put his weapon back in the sling on his back. He stepped back, the men slowing for a second, having to climb over the piles of corpses. Mammoth continued to back up with each pile that was created, if he could make them have to see their own dead in piles, and slow them enough, then the archers would be able to pick them off easily from the top of the ravine. The opposing soldiers finally started charging Mammoth, who began killing them with his bare hands. The first man in met a fist to the face, which crushed in his face, and left him gurgling and screaming in pain on the ground. As the surrounded him, the spears of his allies behind him took down the more foolish soldiers of Starj, but the braver ones were facing a man who was battling men with swords... with his bare hands.
Mammoth grasped a man by the neck and hurled him into his own men. In the chaos, he charged forward, grasping men's necks, arms, legs, whatever he could, and snapping them like twigs. Breaking a man's neck was a far less difficult endevour than it seemed to be, and Mammoth was doing it with one hand. But it was only good for so long, a lucky man leaped into the air and struck Mammoth under the shoulder plate, cutting deep into his arm. He grunted, stepping back and breaking the man's arm, ripping it from the socket.
There were hundreds of bodies laying before him as the battle wore on, and they were running out of ravine to defend in. He could hear the battle behind him dying off, and he quickly howled out to the men behind him.
"To the edges of the ravine! Rain arrows of them!"

Mammoth chuckled, holding out his blade at arms length, and it touched the side of the ravine at full extension. The forces, now faced with the sight of him and Talin at the head of a few hundred men, not only laughed, but halted for a second. Mammoth roared out again, swinging his sword with great ease, in an attempt to intimidate the men closing in. He finally stopped, holding the blade out at the men in front of him.
"Hurry to ya doom! None get by us, today!" Mammoth yelled, turning to his men, who had not seen his heroics earlier. Though, with Talin near, their morale was heightened, they would trust Talin to lead them, and Mammoth would earn their trust here.
"Strike from behind us with your spears! None get by us!" Mammoth yelled to his men behind him, hoping that the other forces would circle around and attack from behind at the group that was closing in on them. The forces in front of them showed fear, but their force of numbers was giving them hope.
"Ya think ya can take half the ravine?" Mammoth said, grinning at Talin.

Mammoth watched as Jocy bolted to fight, and instantly knew that they had been uncovered. Not only was she being struck at, but the sound of marching coming from both sides of the ravine was a sure sign. They were flanked, they were surrounded. The problem was, there was no possible way that Starj should have known about the change in tactics. This problem was either an extreme stroke of luck, or there was a traitor in Korgasa's military ranks giving up the plans. Mammoth shook his head, now seeing the futility of using mercinaries, no doubt one of them was the traitor, if that were the case. No matter, Mammoth knew he had to handle the situation as quickly as possible, or his men in the ravine were dead.
He turned to his men, and pointed at the other side of the ravine.
"half of you, to the rear, they're flanking us. Shoulder to shoulder, sheild to sheild, hold them off if they make it. Once we finish the front we'll come around behind them. The rest of you..." Mammoth turned, holding his claymore up in the air as the forces of Starj were in sight. He let out a horrific roar, it echoed through the trees and shook the men who were being attacked from behind to the very core. When the half near the ravine turned, they were faced with one man, charging, his armor gleaming, and his massive sword tore through three soldiers. The men behind him, emboldened by Mammoth's bravery, joined him, and the charge began.
Mammoth whirled his sword over his head, taking off the heads of a few nearby soldiers, but the element of surprise was wearing off. The turned, and one soldier quickly struck Mammoth's leg with his spear. It peirced his armor, and stabbed into his leg. Mammoth quickly split the man in two with his blade, and broke the stick off of the spear, leaving the blade lodged in his leg. He promptly roared out again, jumping into the air, and landing on a man's back with his sword going down through his neck. The man fell into a pile, and Mammoth was in the middle of a circle of soldiers. Ducking a swing to his head, Mammoth swung his blade low, taking the legs off of a few soldiers, only to roll and bring his blade back the other way, taking the other side of soldiers down. He quickly jumped to his feet, turning to face a horrified force of soldiers.
A brave starj soldier rushed Mammoth, only to find himself cut down by the men surrounding him. Mammoth had earned their trust in only a few quick swings. They charged with him, forcing this force into the open, where they were sandwiched between the main force of Korgasa, and now the flanking forces that were jumping from the trees.
Mammoth cut down a few more men, taking another cut to his arm this time, and quickly began moving from the battle.
"Men, hold them here, this battle is yours! I'll worry about the flanks!" He roared out, as his men agreed. He quickly ran to the ravine, where his men were standing still, but a force was closing in quickly. He called out to the soldiers in front of him, waiting on the attacking force.
"To me! We fight them here!" Mammoth yelled. The soldiers turned, forming up shoulder to shoulder as he had ordered. Mammoth stood in front, watching as a force of men began walking up. Mammoth knew Talin and Fin had seen them, as they were not with the main force. That battle was quickly being won, but now came one that would be harder to win. Standing at the head of only 200 men, Mammoth watched on as the other half of Starj's forces decended into the ravine...

Mammoth moved quickly, as did the rest of the forces. Before he entered the forest, he glanced back, seeing Jodice wandering like a lost pup, but with a furious fire in her eyes. He grinned, stopped, turned around and threw his arm in the air, waving for her to follow him, "Ya look lost, lets go!" He said jokingly. He then returned to the men. If she followed, he would welcome her help, if not, then she was on her own.
They were forming up, the forces as the "Main force", the archers had climbed to their positions in the treetops, and the side strike force had taken its position hiding in the brush. Mammoth moved his unit to the ravine, and took position at the head of it, watching the top, waiting for the signal from the main force, waiting for the moment to strike. He watched with great care the look in his men's eyes, and the doubt they had.
"Ya have no reason to trust in me yet, men. I'll lead the charge, and earn your trust... I'll be the first man in, and the last one out... That I promise." The men looked at him like he was all talk, but he knew that he would soon prove to them his valor. Once he proved his worth to these men, and that he was fighting with them, for them, and not against them, they would join him in slaying every last one of these worthless bastards.
Now it was time to wait... They were prepared, they were ready... All that was left was the calm, the dead roaring silence, the terror, that came before the storm...
(Which kingdom are we battling?)

Mammoth quickly turned to the forest, hearing sounds and rustling, screams, and obviously a battle, and he looked around for the group.
All accounted for... no... Luna... Oh sh**...
He walked up and grabbed the armor of one of the generals, looking him dead in the eyes with a sense of urgency that none had ever seen come from Mammoth.
"We need to get our men into position right now... I have a very bad feelin' one of our own has caused a problem, and they'll be comin' VERY soon. We need our men in position as soon as possible, get them moving now..." He said, his voice grave.
Almost instantly, calls and horns began sounding, the generals mobilizing their forces and beginning to move out where they need to be. Mammoth called for his force, that showed up, obviously impressed by his leadership. They were not at his command entirely yet, as in they wouldn't charge to their deaths for him, but they were beginning to trust him.
He mobilized his unit, and began the fast march to the ravine, he yelled to Pinata and the rest who were going to help him,
"I leave the rest to you. Don't let me down!" He said, pulling his blade and placing his helm on his head. His tone had changed, he was preparing for war. He was no longer the joking lighthearted man he was when not in battle, his demeanor, how he carried himself, it all changed. He stood like a beacon of strength, and he hoped it would pass on to the men he was about to lead....

"We're not driving them into the ravine, we're striking from it... If we drive them into it too far, it leaves the few hundred with me as a main force, and we have to hold our own trapped down there. If we strike from it however, we can surround them, scare them, and hopefully end the fight before it begins. The men on both flanks can't be pushed out of the fight by pushing their forces into he ravine too far." Mammoth clarified for Talin, knowing that this clarification was already made by the generals as well. The ravine wasn't large enough to house a large force, but enough of one to make an impact, if they got stuck down there, they'd be in trouble...
((Sorry for not stating that better earlier))

Mammoth sighed, "We can't afford the forest burning down on top of us.. No fire. I'll handle it the best I can..." He nodded at Pinata and then turned from the group, moving toward the conflicted Jodice. He stopped a few steps short of her, and chuckled.
"A little dramatic, don't you think?" He said, jokingly, "You'll have plenty of time to leave your past behind you." He said, patting her on the shoulder, and then walking away. He wondered if he should pick up the diamond, but he figured it was best if he didn't. He quickly returned to the men, the battle would take formation soon. He had seen to most the preparations, in about an hour, they would set up for battle...

He nodded and smiled at Talin, "Good... But we don't want to push them too far, we want our archers in the trees to have a shot."
Mammoth then turned to Pinata, and grinned, "Ya like getting your hands dirty, eh? Do me a favor... When we start the attack, do somethin' to scare the hell outta them. my battlecry will be the sound to begin the attack, can you follow it up with something?"
After they were done, he turned from Pinata and caught Boran as he was leaving. Boran looked up at Mammoth with a scowl and grumbled.
"Boran... We are of the same people. Can we not rise above this useless rivalry? Use ya prowess in battle, ya skill, to assist me. Ya can have all the glory ya want if ya can say you were a general who helped win this war... But I can't have ya fighting with me."
Boran looked down, and seemed to take Mammoth's words to heart. He then looked back up, a smile on his face, "I just didn't wanna be in your shadow anymore... You beat me back home..." He said.
"It's alright, how can ya get better if ya don't run into someone better than you?"
Mammoth quickly moved ahead to catch up with the other generals who were rallying the troops up to formation. Mammoth needed to speak with them. Such a different plan would no doubt strike fear into the men, they know not who they follow. Mammoth wanted to speak with them.
As the lines formed, Mammoth stood at the front of them, the other generals standing next to him. As the plan was explained to each officer, and passed down to the men as it mattered to them, Mammoth finally spoke.
"Men, by now ya probably wonder who it is who changed your tactics. I am Mammoth, and I joined this war to help you men win. You have seen the terrors of our enemies, you know their cruelty. We will stand and fight, together as one, and drive them from this land! I do not expect you to trust me. You are warriors, warriors who know the faults of blind trust. I will earn your trust on the battlefield with you, fighting at your side. I need every one of you to think of that which you love, and know that through this battle they will be saved! It will be on this day that Korgasa makes the enemy know fear!"
He had hoped the men would listen to him, even if just enough to follow the plan. He knew it was war, and nothing went as planned, that was why he had himself pitted in the middle of it, to command from the field.
Soon enough, a general had brought a unit of a few hundred men to Mammoth's side, and told him that these would be the men with him in the ravine. They had an obvious doubt in their eyes, and they stood before the towering man with pride. They knew they were accomplished fighters, but they knew nothing of the man they would be fighting for.
"I know you men have doubts. But, you will be the backbone of the battle. IF you think you cannot trust me, then trust each other. I will be at the head of the line, and I will lead the charge. If you cannot trust me once the battle is won, then I will leave your company." HE said, nodding to the men, "For now, get your rest, I'll speak with you all when the time comes."
He sighed, knowing that it would be difficult to lead an army that didn't believe in him. He would have to work to earn their trust...

"I said nothin' of your competence... ya Generals... Well, thats another story." Mammoth paused for a second and then spoke again "But, I apologize, nonetheless."
He then looked behind him at the group he had traveled with, it would seem that they may be parting ways. He wondered if any would come with him, but he figured that was not his choice to make, only they could decide. So, he walked into the tent behind the king and Boran. As he walked up to a war table with a few generals spread out around it, he saw a very detailed map of the surrounding area. He listened to the generals speak, talking of standoffs and line against line battle. Mammoth simply listened until they were finished. When the generals looked to the king for approval, Mammoth interjected.
"If ya wanna die, that plan is good." he said, the generals looking at him oddly.
He began moving the figures that displayed different troops around the map, and finally he had them set up. He moved them all near the main force of the opposing forces, not leaving one unit to protect the king or anyone else. He had them in an all out attack, surrounding the opposing forces from a ravine, treetops, and think underbrush.
"That ravine is a strike point. They're gonna push through, expectin' ya tactics to be the same, and they'll overlook it. We position 3 units in the front, to mask our plan. The unit the ravine will jump from behind them, flank them hard. These four units led by you men," He said, pointing to the four generals, "Will come from the thick brush here. They won't see you coming. You two, will come from the treetops, they're thick enough that a unit of archers can sit and get a good shot off. No doubt we won't shoot on our own men, but they'll be scattered enough for easy shots. Once that happens, the two units drop from the trees. We'll have them surrounded, and at that point they're finished." He pointed to a few more positions for additional troops as backup.
He then looked around the room at the generals, who didn't have any idea the meager forces they had could be used like that.
"It's stretching ya thin, but if ya don't stop 'em here, there's no way ya will."
He then looked over at the king.
"I'll take the unit in the ravine, if they aren't confident the plan will fail. The element of surprise must be there to make their forces, which outnumber and out-equip ours, break."
He leaned back, grinning at Boran, who had a look of anger on his face

Mammoth stepped forward, seeing Talin be very friendly with the king, and spoke after they were done.
"So you're the king... I'll speak bluntly, I don't like to waste time..." Mammoth said, resting his massive blade on his shoulder. "Your men are pushed too hard, your generals are incompetent, your forces are weaker than the enemies, yet your men fight like they have the advantage. You know the terrain, yet ya don't use it, you know the enemy, yet you fail to take advantage of that knowledge. My offer is simple. I am Mammoth, Barbarian of the North, expert tactician, and seasoned warrior. I have seen the ill-tempered wastes of life your neighbors are, and I wish to assist you in bringing them down. If ya are interested, let me know, and I'll tell you more of how its goin' to be done..."
He stood tall, not going to kneel, not going to show this king any more respect than he would a common man. Respect was earned, not given, and this King had done nothing more than rule a land of good people. Mammoth's respect was not earned yet. He looked around the camp, and caught the eye of one of the generals, a man he had seen before.
"Mammoth!" The man howled, walking up and holding his blade out, "You drove me out of our homeland, get out of here before I kill you!"
"Boran... Nice way to greet me..." He stuck his sword in the ground, "No doubt ya're leadin' these men to their deaths like ya led our soldiers. Funny how we won the battle after I relieved ya of command..." He stepped forward, looking down on the other barbarian, standing close to him, "If you're leadin' these men, Korgasa is doomed..."
Boran, furious, turned from Mammoth and faced the king, yelling, while kneeling. He pointed at Mammoth, "Let me rid us of his presence, my lord!"
Mammoth laughed, "Boran! Ya kneelin' like a whipped pup! Some general!" He laughed again.
Boran was turning red, and clutched the hilt of his blade, awaiting the word of the king. Mammoth hoped the king would allow him to prove himself by again humiliating Boran...

"What is this? Music class or a d**ned war-party?" He said, jumping to his feet, "And who the hell are you?" he said, obviously annoyed with the man Luna was talking to.
His meditation seemed to have been interrupted enough by the combination of music, storytelling, and some random guy that just randomly showed up in the middle of the camp without any signs of himself. Mammoth was also annoyed this mysterious man had been able to sneak up on him. But, he could see his irritability, and he turned to walk away. He just wasn't in the mood for music, he was preparing to command troops in a war. Music was a distraction, and he was annoyed at the constant playing of less than practiced players. They were good, but no professionals.
He turned from the group, "I apologize..." Walking away from the group, he sat down by a small tree a good distance from the fire. The fire's warmth was missed, but the quiet that was provided from being away from the group was welcome. He returned to his meditation, resting and clearing his mind. When Talin was ready to move, they would tell him.
