Eric chewed on an already mutilated stirring rod, the clear plastic clouded with steam from the mug of coffee beneath it. He wasn't often the pensive sort, perfering to just stay rolling in the tides his life pulled him through, but now there seemed to be an atmosphere drawing out the philosopher in Reynolds. There had been a lot in his life to regret from his tragic upbringing to the loss of a comrade just today. The man scratched at his nose and set the rod back into his drink. "Well d**n I want a smoke somethin awful..." A bemused half grin played over his face, but hardly fit his current thought process.
The human was feeling particularly nostalgic, reminicing on the slums of his hometown and the things he had to give up in order to withstand life in the military. He'd been clean the entirety of his enlistment, but there was always that little pinprick of desire to retreat into the drug-induced coma that helped him cope for so many years. Not only that his age was starting to bear down on him. His face was lined, marking every smile and every frown, each eye roll and elevator glance. He still hadn't attoned for the crimes of his youth nor had he brought about all the changes he'd dreamt of as an ideallistic young adult.
He shook his head with a snort, picking up the still 3/4s full mug and leaving the empty dinner plate on the table carelessly. "Keep thinkin like that I'll end up with dishonorable discharge." He snickered halfheartedly. "Best start that report... wanna take full advantage of my break."

Darald started back towards engineering, though he kept a watch over his shoulder the whole way until the door slid shut behind him.
The empty plate suddenly whizzed by Eric's head like a frizzbee, nearly clipping his ear before arching gracefully to land in the waste bin. " You should be more careful corp," the warm, friendly voice of Delta 2 called out behind him. Arz'tere'tal-nalimar, who more commonly went by Arz for no other reason than most sentient races couldn't properly pronouce her name, smiled at Eric. Not that most humans would know it was a smile, her mouth didn't move at all, it was the way her eyes changed, turning a light blue as the pupils thinned into horizontal slits. Her eyes were large for her head, compared to most races, but they were the only thing that seemed large about Arz. She was reed thin, tiny looking with pinkish red skin and whispy pink hair. Her face was very round and seemed like a mask, nothing ever moved on that face except her eyes. Not even her mouth moved to speak, her words coming from a small gem that rested on a necklace; the Trfalmth spoke with a subsonic humming that most races couldn't even hear without the translator. " You know how touchy the cafe workers are about leaving a mess behind, you wouldn't want to find a r'kkkst beetle in your next meal now," she teased.

Reynolds rubbed his ear and checked his hand, instinctively for blood. "If I were to find somethin like that in my food I'd just switch trays with someone else. And should you try to behead me with a plate again it'd probably be with you." It had taken some time to get used to Arz's way of communication and still he wasn't able to read all of her minute displays of expressing emotion. "On the other hand..." The man cooed with a smile he had tried very hard to hide, "I'm willing to try anything once."

Arz frowned in confusion, that is to say, her eyes turned green and her pupils became small, beady circles. " Try a r'kkkst beetle?" she asked. " I know you human's often eat odd things, but no one would willing try a r'kkkst beetle, not if they want to keep their ability to taste." The clear, nictating membrane of her secondary eyelids blinked. " Or was that some kind of human humor I missed?"

Eric snickered, cultural differances always caught him amusingly off gaurd. He walked over and planted a smart pat on the Trfalmth's back. "It's a joke, it's a joke. We human's are a bit uncouth in our sense of humor." He scratched under his jaw reconcidering the statement. "Granted if no harm would come of it, I really would eat anything once."

(I'm going to have to write down all these different eye patterns if I'm going to keep them straight ) " I would not say your humor is...ah, but that is more human humor, making fun of yourself," Arz said. " I often miss that, it is so odd. Sarcasm and word play are easy, but make jokes at your own expense..." Her eyes turned yellow with oval pupils, a sign of thoughtfulness. " Is that why you would try to eat anything at least once, even if it was unpleasant? For a joke?"

((Haha I bet! It sounds so involved! I'll have to doodle her up, the premise of her design facinates me.))
"You know thats probably a better question that it seems." He looked upward and frowned, trying to come up with a decent answer. "I think we do that sort of thing just to prove we can. Where I come from its common place to do something stupid or reckless because to get through it gives you a reputation or a status." Eric started to snicker despite himself. "Though now that I think about it, thats sort of a joke in and of itself. People do all sorts of ridiculous things for attention and distinction." With a grin never quite fading he looked up to his comrade. "Do you ever have those types of people where you're from, Arz?"

(I'd love to see that if you do)
" Yes," Arz said as her eyes turned blue again, very bright blue this time. " We call them fools or worse." Her voice sounded very innocent as she said this.

Reynolds frowned, raising a brow suspiciously. "Ya' know... something about the way you said that worries me..."

" Oh?" Arz asked, her voice overwhelming sweet. " I can not imagine why that could be. To worry you would be the very last thing I would ever want to do..."

"And yet you keep doin it." He shook his head, rubbing at the back of his neck. Eric heaved a thoughtful sigh before looking up to the woman. He waved his hand and the forecast of a grin played at the creases near his mouth. "Best not be plannin to blackmail me with that. Anything I'm hiding is just out of modesty." The smile broke through at the conclusion of the statement and he folded his arms, tucking in his chin with a quiet laugh.

" Blackmail?" Arz's voice was a mock gasp, and she placed her hand to her mouth in an imitation of human shock, though her eyes still smiled. " Why, that would be most unbecoming behavior, especially towards a superior officer. I would never consider it."

"Yes it really would and I would simply hate to dock your pay for such a breech of authority. Granted if I did I might be able to take myself out to a nice dinner..." Eric's shoulders shuddered with the containment of laughter. There was really no point to the conversation, which was a nice change of pace.

" Take yourself out to dinner..." Arz's eyes practically glowed. " Why, is the dear corporal saying he knows of no one he would ask to join him? Or do you think my pay is so poor that it would make so little difference?"

"Perhaps I just have trouble finding company I enjoy as much as mine." Reynolds suggested with a shrug. "Not that your pay isn't low." He pat his chest as if extending sympathy. "I would never accuse you of anything but."
