Aiyana watched the spot where she'd seen the movement and Coda had just attacked and the smoke rising before the creature.
"Take cover in the river bed!" the hunter called, urging people back to where the flames wouldn't catch. Knocking an arrow in her bow string, Aiyana backed up a few paces, keeping her bow trained on the area where the creature fell, as well as scouting the general area.
"Check to make sure nothing else is around." She warned, afraid the things might travel in packs.

The fire caught quickly on the dead, dry grass, and it spread with alarming speed. An odd and unfamiliar growling screech came from the grass and a creature burst into view, splashing into the water. It looked almost like a wolf, but it's face was squat, with no sign of a nose. It's small eyes hung directly over a set of huge, thickly muscled jaws with needle pointed teeth. Thin, black lips pulled back in a snarl.

Krenaian slipped his pack onto his shoulder as he dove for the water. Then he noticed the strange beast. He quickly brandished his spear and took up a defensive stance, waiting to see what the creature would do. He didn't wait long.
The creature growled with a strange sound that was almost more of a hiss than a growl and lunged at Krenaian. Krenaian quickly spun his spear in a wide arc, slashing at the creature. The spear head cleanly sliced the beast in two, and Krenaian stood staring wide-eyed at the damage the spear had caused.
"I know I can use a spear...but this is new. What just happened?" he asked to nobody in particular.

"Meat." Vinanti said with a confidant air from where she had been cowering in a dry brush. "We don't have enough time to waste on ponderings of philosophy and spirituality just yet. When we're in safer domain and have ample supplies we can do that." Undeterred by the bleeding corpse, the strong woman pulled the lower end of the body out of the stagnant water by the haunches. Long-nailed fingers kneaded into the flesh of the leg and she frowned. "Not much, perhaps, but food nonetheless. We can eat a small portion and dry the rest as we walk." Kneeling, she let her pack fall in front of her.
"Someone... Contain the fire before it catches. Use the mud to make the boundaries and continue to moisten it if the flames threaten to breech." The dark featured woman felt much more at ease in this scenario, taking the lead and feeling in control of her surroundings. It was one of few moments she would have and, as a result, took full advantage of the situation.

The front end of the bi-sected creature suddenly jerked and thrashed. With a spray of water and blood, it's front legs dragged it forward towards Vinanti with alarming speed, a light of maddness, pain, and fury in it's eyes. Jaws snapping, with no regard for it's own entrails spilling out behind it, it lunged for the woman holding onto the other half of it's body.

The woman screeched, falling backwards into the dusty earth. There wasn't much of a place to run and she was, alas, caught in an unfortunate position. In instinctive desperation, she curled so that her arms and legs protected the soft insides that, if damaged, almost guaranteed death. Her eyes clenched tight and her mind went blank with a seering brightness of fear.

Krenaian quickly whipped out a javelin and hurled it on a nearly perfect course to hit the half of the beast that was still moving. It struck square between the beast's shoulder blades and pierced it completely, sticking into the ground nearby. The javelin held the raving creature in place, though it didn't seem that it would hold for long.
Krenaian kept his spear in a defensive position and moved over towards Vinanti. "Are you okay?" he asked while keeping his sight locked on the strange beast.

Slowly, the woman's body unwound. Blood dotted her face and limbs, revealed as she straightened herself. She couldn't find the strength to move, even, shivering, her lips parted and eyes wide. "Thank.... thank you..." Vinanti gasped out in a hoarse whisper.
With some effort she got into a seated position, her eyes grazing over the twice severed body of the wolf. "Sir warrior..." She called out to Krenaian, still in a hushed tone. "I have a bond with mother earth, not of the spirits that hover beyond its reach... What sorcery is this? I can't imagine such a creature pure enough to eat... We'd be tainted to." She looked towards the man, honestly seeking advice. The near death experience did not sit well with her. Her tanned complexion was paled and her eyes glistened with a threat of tears.

Coda saw Krenaian defending Vinanti and a surge of jealousy shot through her body. She shook it off and tried to find a way to stop the fire.
((edited so it wasn't all too magical, lmao.))

Krenaian muttered a prayer to the spirits. He asked the dragonfly for the power to see the truth behind this strange beast. He kept his gaze on the creature continuously. As the dragonfly's powers began to flow through him, vision of the auras surrounding himself and others began to appear. He molded his own aura down to a thin, but very dense, sheet surrounding himself. He then focused the energy into a screen between himself and the creature. Those without spirit sight could not see what he was doing, but it was obvious that he was concentrating very hard. Through the screen, he could see the strange black aura of the creature. There was also something else that seemed unnatural.
((take it away LH!))

( Okay, I hate to do this, but things are getting a bit out of hand and I want to set things straight. I don't like ever saying someone can't do something, but I have to here. Magic in this world is not a flashy, easy to see, directly influencing power. The magic items I gave you guys are easily the most powerful magic to be found availible to human kind, but even they are just on the edge of being obviously magical when compared to magic items found in most fantasy settings. The magical items simply work better than their mundane counter points, they are not full of tricks and many different powers. I'm please asking everyone to keep the magic less direct and obvious, to keep in line with the way I set up the world. Thank you and please don't take it personally.)
The beast twisted and writhed on the ground, it's blood pooling thickly out into the river. It's struggles slowed, and the light went out of its eyes. As he watched it, Krenaian could just see a shapeless dark form detach from the creature, hovering in the sunlight for a breif moment before it faded to nothing, leaving behind a mutated, lifeless corpse.

((Oh I'm aware of that! I'm sorry if I ended up implying more. Vinanti is a bit superstitious :3 So a cleaved animal attacking struck her as unnatural and cursed is all. Krenaian is more spiritual than she is so she asked him for his advice on the subject, figuring it wasn't edible! I apologize, I didn't mean to make things rough there ;-; ))
The medicine woman licked her lips, backing away from the body on her hands and knees, not bothering with the fact that she was dragging herself through the soft innards that the creature had spilled. "Oh what have we been thrust into... Truly truly there are greater evils than I had realized... Not only is mother earth being ravished by plague and drought, moving life itself is tainted."

Aiyana darkly eyed the creature's body on the ground, having watched earlier as the shadow escaped the beast. After a moment she shook her head and made certain that the group would be untouched as the flames quickly spread about them.
"We'll not have much luck trying to quell that fire... we don't have the means to stop it," even as she spoke though, Aiyana did as Vianti suggested, trying to use the mud to stop them from spreading too rapidly.
"If it isn't already obvious... be on your guard, there still may be more around."

The fire was eating up the dry grass quickly, spreading out away from the river, towards the forest, leaving nothing but blackened earth and ash. A chorus of growling, screeching voices announced the presence of several more of the short jawed, wolfish beasts, but they were on the other side of the flames, and moving away.

Knocking another arrow, Aiyana perched on the bank of the river, her eyes sweeping past the flames in search of the enemies.
"Someone try to find us an alternative path that won't be quite so... warm."
