The assassin's guild of Midvale, a medium-sized city, is the oldest surviving institution there. Established under a long-forgotten king to keep unruly nobles in check, it now makes money by collecting protection money from the area's nobles and, of course, assassination.
The guild has grown immensely rich over the centuries. Besides assassins, spies and detectives it now also employs artists, scholars, alchemists, mages and inventors, and every other job that might be useful. It also offers free education to members, so they become more adept at their job, and extremely expensive education to everyone else who is willing to pay. Their building has not only meeting rooms, but also living rooms, classrooms, libraries, workshops and a museum. The ornate building is chock full of the finest art acquired over the centuries, as payment or otherwise.
The setting is: Normal Fantasy, Renaissance-Era technology, with magic. Feel free to use any imaginary piece of clockwork technology you can think of, as long as you can make up some quasi-scientific/magical mumbo-jumbo explaining why it works, and it isn't ridiculously overpowered. Still, they got pretty ingenious back then - even wooden clockwork calculators were developed. And there's the Rule of Cool: If it's cool, it works, accuracy be danged.
Any race can be used: the Guild is very open-minded about killing.
Guns can be used, in the form of muskets and flintlocks. Just remember that they are very loud and have to be reloaded after every shot - gunpowder first, then the bullet.
The Dark Empire is more advanced - I haven't filled in all the details yet, but I'm thinking "Steam-powered Mordor".
Besides the technology, there is also magic.
The idea is that the characters are all members of the Guild, but if you can think of another reason for your character to join, that's fine too.
The plot (more accurately: Story Guideline) is as follows:
Far in the East, an Empire has risen. It's ruler, Archduke Cryph, has mercilessly crushed all opposition, going so far as to slaughter entire tribes.
The Elvish Ale'eno tribe was one of the affected tribes. After arrows and magic failed to stop Cryph's armies, they decided to send an envoy to Midvale, so the guild might succeed in assassinating their oppressor. Their payment: enough mithril to buy everything in the city three times over.
The plot will include a lot of travel, so I'll draw some maps.
Who is interested?
