*Azra looked even more surprised at that, and it took her a few moments to come up with the right way to respond.* "I... wasn't aware that anyone noticed, your highness. Though in truth, you are correct."

"now why would the future queen of Valeria, not join in on the celebration and festivities? A gathering like this has not happened in years."

*Azra frowned a little, her voice a little more bitter than she meant it to be.* "The future queen of Valeria has seen enough parties filled with drunken men whose eyes only flit to her in a covetous and lecherous manner, your highness. While I appreciate the combination of the great forces of the world, it has nothing to do with me, unfortunately."

"it should. You're going to be the queen... if women were more important in these regions, why my mother would have come with me. She's just as important to my country as my father is."

*Azra raised an eyebrow at him.* "She is very lucky then... The gender roles in Valerian society are rather complicated, your highness... If I were of lower status, my role would be nearly equal to that of any man's. But as queen, I will be under the command of my king... despite the fact that the court will depend on me for valuable advice and strategies..."

"I guess she is very lucky, though I don't understand why the same doesn't apply here."

"Neither do I, your highness. But this is the way our society has been for centuries. It will not change any time soon. So while I may wish to be joining in the debates and strategies... I will remain the ornament at my... beloved prince's side... It is my duty..." *She frowned at the word, her eyes straying elsewhere so that the prince wouldn't see the disgust in them.*

"people are so strange... pushing one class or gender to the top when it really takes all to make something work."

"Forgive me if I am too bold, your highness, but it seems that you are the strange one here... Here, society values a woman in the home, in the field, in the battle, in the school... not in the throne. I am an ornament, advisor, and bearer of heirs. But this is what is normal and has been forever... It always shall be."

"I just don't see how it's strange. Each member of the society has to help it grow. You can't battle without warriors, but you can't feed the warriors or people without the farmers. The farmers will have no place to farm if there's no one to make their home. The architects can't build homes if no one employs them, and that's where royalty comes in. They hire the builders, the farmers, and the warriors, the seamstresses, and everyone else, and take care of them. But the king can't do it alone, the queen has to keep the king level-headed and make him realize his mistakes and show him what may be best for the country."

*Azra listened to all of this carefully and with some level of surprise, though she couldn't help the smile that formed on her lips.* "The Valerian people understand this as well, but they also believe that some people are still above others, no matter who they must depend on or who depends on them. Royalty will always dominate the lower classes, despite recognizing their uses and providing for them. Men will always dominate women, despite recognizing the neccessity of their existence and taking care of them. You and I may be equally useful, your highness, though I am certain you are far more useful than I, but in either case, I must always assure you of your dominance and you will always triumph over me, simply because you are a man and I am not."

"not always. the ruler before my father was his mother because her husbad was so incompetant. He was leading everyone into poverty, so she took over even though he was still living. In the end, the royalty only have as much power as the people give them."

"The people of Valeria will always give the royalty the power, simply for the sake of tradition. And the women will always give the men the power because they have no choice. The men control everything and are unafraid to be ruthless in achieving their goals. Women are more sensible and avoid causing any unneccessary damage, even if it means being controlled..."

*Azra simply fell silent for a moment, considering this as she looked at a flowering vine nearby.*
