He sat in a corner, uneasy, calculating. The room before him held other prisoners, though most of them had surrendered and submitted themselves to this hopeless existence. It angered and isolated him. How could their wills be so weak? They couldn't possibly accept to live and die in this miserable place, or worse, to allow themselves to be brainwashed or converted. His previous attempts had reaped only failure and punishment. They were too smart, too strong. As impossible and suicidal as it seemed, the question of escape was non-negotiable. He would not, could not, bend to the twisted wishes of the monsters that held him here.
Something was very wrong in the world these days. Nothing was as it seemed. Reality had become twisted, and normalcy had become a thing of wishes and dreams. Innocence was punished, and immorality praised. They impersonated friend and family. They demoralized and sabotaged. They were trying to destroy his life and would not cease until he was one of them.
His life had taken a downward spin right before his capture. This was when everything started to go wrong. He had always been cognizant of the supernatural, inhuman and evil, though he had never anticipated this. They seeped in through the cracks and spread to corrupt everything he held dear. They had made the life he lived contorted and fragile. He lost everything.

"Tanya?"
David Boweman stepped into his living room, tossing his coat onto an armchair. "Hello?" He tried again. Sounds of movement brought him to the kitchen. She was there, at the stove, mechanically turning the contents of a pot.
"Tanya, babe? Did you talk with Dr. Sherman today?"
Tanya turned from the stove, one hand on her hip. Her expression was a cross between agitation and worry. Her look of concern mirrored his own.
"No, David," She spoke slowly and quietly, "How are you feeling today?"
David shot his wife a confused look before answering, "You know I'm fine. I'm worried about you." He seated himself at the dining room table.
Opening a cabinet overhead, Tanya responded, "Don't. There's nothing wrong with me." She pulled out two dinner plates and continued, "Do you wanna go out tonight or something?"
"It's not healthy to ignore a problem like this!" David's tone was caring, yet firm, "Something's wrong, Tan. I know it is. I just want you to be happy and well again. You need to call the doctor." He subconsciously gripped the edge of the table as he spoke.
"Promise me you'll call him," his brown eyes bore into hers.
After a moment of hesitation Tanya replied, "Please don't do this, Dave," she tried to fight the burning sensation forming in her eyes. She turned from him, ladling turkey stew onto each of the plates, knowing what would most likely follow if she continued. "There is no problem."

So David remained seated, plotting, endlessly trying to find a way around their walls. The poison they forced on him daily made even this difficult and very tiring. Just the thought of this daily control they had over him was enough to push him over the edge...
Calm down, man. He exhaled, Now is not the time to lose it. Focus and plan. You're smarter than that. You will get out of here if you can just-
His train of thought was broken by the entrance of a girl, both of her arms gripped restrainedly by two of them, each threatening in their unsuitably white coats. They released her into the room and one of them snickered, "Play nice." David glared at the man with unyielding hatred, catching his eye and earning a menacing smirk in return.
The girl was more attentive and frightened than the rest in the room. She must have been new to this h*ll. She made her way timidly to a table across the room and sat down, rubbing the now-red impressions on her arms where she had been held.
Surprisingly, David felt a small glimmer of hope looking at this girl. Terrified as she may have been, he still sensed she had spirit. She was too new to have conformed to the zombie-like nature that seemed to emanate from the others here..
