Cluster Year 0946, Day 129, hour 1459: Contact with the A.S. Marquise , property of the Angzi Corporation, has been officially lost amidst silence from the Marquise . The ship officially disappeared into unknown space 21 days ago, taking with her a total crew of 132, including 53 scientists, 29 engineers, 37 security personnel, and 14 operation personnel. Remaining family members have been informed that the search has not ended. No explanation for this loss of contact has been found yet, but rescue teams are hopeful that it is merely an incident; the transmission relays have been proven prone to failure during solar eruptions, and no workaround has been found yet as the equipment is still experimental.Cluster Year 1024, Day 242, hour 1521: Nearly twelve hours ago at hour 0317, the U.M.S Odysseus picked up a distress call from an unidentified ship, and has rounded about to respond. Disputes as to the exact nature of this call are in order, however, as the ship computer insists that it is from the A.S. Marquise , even though the Angzi Corporation filed for Chapter 13 some 17 years ago after a long decline into bankruptcy. Dispatch calls to the scrap freighter X.M. Buccaneer were responded to this morning, and they are en route to recover anything that may be of value from whatever might be found at the appointed destination.I've been itching for a decent sci-fi RP for a while, and though a few have popped up here, most have fallen short and died rather ungloriously. Tech and timeline is similar to that in Alien, though a bit more advanced. However, there's no chestbursters here, and no real aliens at all; the story will more closely resemble the game System Shock and its brilliant sequel (one of the best games I've ever played), and though there might be creatures, none of them will be "aliens". So... anyone interested ?

Well, preferably some insight into what exactly the story is gonna be, who we're supposed to be playing etc would be good, but I'm down.

Well, here's the background basics: The ship's just reappeared after a distress call some 78 years after its disappearance, and two different crews; one is comprised of military units (I would really like to avoid the term "Marines" because its just so overused and loaded) that will be doing much of the searching and rescuing (though who knows how much of that there'll be to do, considering the ship's age); the other is a Vulture crew, sent there namely to salvage whatever they can from the deleric ship. Once they get there each crew will be separated, though with whom will be decided once each group gets there. For the sake of not wanting to reveal too much, all hell breaks loose, and the ship works against the crews for the most part to "dispatch" them. There is another force at work but I won't say exactly what it is... Anyways, I'd prefer people play as one group or the other, but to explain each one better: the military group (i'll think of something before starting this >.<) will primarily be searching for survivors and attending to any, as well as investigating the root cause of this disaster. They also carry the heavier firepower but in limited quantities. the Vultures are a free-lance group, not directly controlled under the government but acting beneath them nonetheless. They'll be leaning more towards picking apart the station, and therefore will be more suitable for problem-solving and the like. That's not to restrict anyone to one particular group for good, but it'd probably be best to stay with one character. The most I'll be playing is three (one military, one Vulture, and the antagonist), but I'll most likely stick to two. If no one wants to lead the other faction, I'll lead it as well, but I'd like someone to take command of one. We can work that out later though. All the players besides myself will be playing "good" characters, though moral indecisiveness is not frowned upon In fact, it'd make things more interesting; don't be afraid to turn on your fellow characters when the situation permits, as there's quite a bounty on many things within the ship's confines. Getting out with it alive... will be another story. One thing I would like to add: if people are willing, character death might be a prominent theme here, though in a limited and controlled setting so as to avoid godmodding whenever possible. It makes things more interesting when you know your character can be killed, but I'll try not to force it. Does that answer most of your questions (: ?

Sounds good to me, I have a few characters in mind that could work. I would definitely work out as commanding the military group. But, for this thread to get rockin, we'd need activity...

But, see, I don't really have anything to go on for what the heck to do, what to describe, nothing. Even the comparisons given are of no use to me, since I haven't seen any Alien movies (except AVP), and I haven't seen/played System Shock. :/

the whole point of sci fi is that is can be anything because its futuristic. Be creative.. I've never played System Shock, and I've seen ONE Alien movie.

just the opposite... I've played SS and never seen any of the ALien movies ^-^"
Really, its just an hour or so of research if you want to get into it... grimy, Dystopian, cyberpunk, noir-ish sci-fi is closer to fantasy than you think. I can give ya a list of stuff to look up on for reference (and don't just use Wiki, because the picts they use are, more often than not, weak; a picture says a thousand words, and Google works well for that):
Movies (there's more than this, but can't think of them atm x-x): -Blade Runner -the Alien quadrilogy -Event Horizon -2001: A Space Odyssey (in case you don't recognize HAL)
Anime (for the dark, demented, Dystopian settings, mostly): -Ghost in the Shell -Appleseed -Ergo Proxy
Games: -System Shock 1/2 (can't really think of any other ones off the top of my head ^-^" )
All of these are just examples, but should be easy enough to find... I Googled Event Horizon, found a Wiki page and picts in seconds x-x
