"As you wish, mila- er, I mean, Leah," he said, correcting himself midword and flushing slightly. "If... if you don't mind me asking, what do you meanwhen you say your parents consider you anything but a lady?"

*Leah shrugged, standing and crossing to the windowsill where Taimi perched, dozing lightly.* "I'm not known for being delicate or obedient..." *She gave an expression of disgust.* "Ladies don't climb trees, fence with the kitchen drudges, or romp around in the grass with runnerbeasts..."

"I get the feeling that I wouldn't enjoy being the one to tell you to do something you didn't want to." Paulin smiled wyrly. "Of course, I guess I already have, haven't I?"

*Leah turned to smile at Paulin, shaking her head.* "I didn't mind... You're only here because my father asked it of you... Besides, your company is more enjoyable than that of some other artists I've had to deal with in the past..." *She grinned.* "I remember one man who became so frustrated with my lack of cooperation that he actually threw his painting on the floor and stormed out of the room..." *She laughed softly, leaning back against the sill.*

Paulin's eyes danced. "His name wouldn't have been Macartor, would it have? Because I remember when he came back from an assignment once, complaining bitterly about a certain Lord's daughter. The words he used weren't exactly fit for polite company."

"Actually, that name does sound rather familiar... I do hope he's not a friend of yours... He wasn't a very pleasant man."

Paulin grinned. "He's more of a colleague than a friend. He's an excellent artist, far better than I am, but he isn't really the personable type." He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Actually, he's the one who recommended this contract to me. Now that I think of it, he was probably hoping that I'd have as much trouble as he did."

*Leah laughed softly.* "Well, I hope this wasn't that painful for you..."

Paulin smiled. "No, far from it. I must say, you aren't exactly what I expected... of course, that's what comes from listening to the stories of disgruntled painters."

*Leah gave him an amused smile.* "What exactly were you expecting?"

Paulin grinned. "You met Macartor. What sort of impression do you think he'd have given me of you?"

"Let's see... That I'm a rebellious beast of a girl with no sense of propriety, decency, or obedience? That I'm hopelessly stubborn, impatient, and barbaric?"

Paulin smiled. "That's almost what he said word for word. Of course, now that I've met you for myself, I think I can safely say he was, at the very least, exaggerating.

*Leah laughed, stepping away from the windowsill.* "Get to know me and you might change your mind on that point..."

Paulin raised his eyebrows. "Would that be a challenge?"
