((Elite only. I want this to be an rpg that focuses mainly on life outside of the Weyrs. I don't mind if we have a dragonrider or two come to visit the Holds or whatever, but let's have this take place mostly with Hold and Craft. The time period is the 12th turn of the 9th pass.))
"Leah! Leah, come down from there before you fall and hurt yourself!"
*Leah laughed softly, glancing down at one of her older sisters.* "I won't fall! Just a little higher!" *As if in response, the little green fire-lizard flitting about her head chirped and flew higher into the branches of the tall tree. Leah reached for another branch, ignoring her sister's protests from far below. She climbed a little higher before stopping to rest on the thickest branch she could find. She smiled brightly as she looked out over the landscape. She could see for what seemed like miles from this point... Taimi hovered excitedly about her head, echoing Leah's pleasure at the view. She saw figures in the distance, some that she recognized like the drudges in the northern field and others that she couldn't place elsewhere in the east. Her good time was spoiled by the constant, high-pitched scolding from the ground below. Sighing, she slowly made her way back down, branch by branch, until she finally dropped to her feet on the soft earth.*
"What were you thinking? You're a Lord's daughter not some wild animal! Honestly, Leah, I don't know what to do with you sometimes!"
"You could try leaving me alone for a while." *Leah frowned, Taimi finally falling quiet and resting on her shoulder perch.*
"If I left you alone, you'd probably get yourself killed... Romping around with runnerbeasts, climbing trees to ungodly heights, cutting yourself and the local boys to shreds during fencing bouts... I don't want to see what other kinds of trouble you can get into. Just get back inside and change. You look a wreck."
*Leah only rolled her eyes before striding off toward the Hold, not bothering to argue with her sister any longer. It was always pointless.*

Paulin sat in his quarters, waiting for his subject to arrive. She must have forgotten about her sitting, he mused, sketching the view out the window. He had only recently passed his tests, and had been hired by Lord Oterel to do pictures of the Lord and his immediate family. He was supposed to be painting the Lord's daughter, but she was over a quarter of a candlemark late.

*As soon as she arrived in her chambers, her mother was immediately fussing.*
"Leah! Where have you been? And look at you! You can't go covered in dirt with your hair falling out in every direction! Hurry up and wash! You're already late! I'll pick out a gown for you. And try not to soil this one!"
*It took Leah a moment to understand what the woman was talking about. But when she did, she immediately groaned.* "Portraits..."
"Yes, portraits! Now hurry!"
*Purely against her will, Leah quickly went to wash the dirt from her skin, scrubbing it clean with sand. She was hardly even dry before her mother was dressing her and pulling an emerald gown over her head. She had lifted a hand to fix Leah's hair but Leah quickly pushed it away.* "Mother! Please!" *Leah hated being fussed over and dressed like a doll... She took the gold ribbons and wound them around her hair herself, keeping her usual pigtail style despite her mother's protests. Soon her mother was practically shoving her through a door and into the chamber where the artist sat waiting. Leah didn't have time to say anything before the door was closed behind her. Sighing, she simply stepped into the room, her eyes falling on the man that stood there. He was older than her, but by how many years she couldn't tell... She studied him for a moment, waiting for him to say something.*

Paulin, absorbed in his sketching, didn't even notice the entrance of Leah for a few moments. Hurriedly standing up, his face flushing, he bowed slightly. "Milady..." He gestured to a chair behind the easel. "If you would be so kind as to take a seat and be as still as possible..."

*Leah couldn't help but smile to herself at his flushed expression. At least he wasn't as stiff and proud as most of the men that came to visit the Hold. Still, he held all of the usual manners and politeness of everyone else she met... Slowly, rather dreading the prospect of sitting still for a long time, she crossed the room to sit on the offered chair. She suddenly felt rather awkward, like some sort of prized jewel on display to be gawked at. Suddenly, Taimi zoomed over to the chair, perching on Leah's shoulder and posing in her own peculiar little way. Leah couldn't help but laugh softly.* "No, Taimi... Father doesn't want your portrait. You can watch from there..." *She pointed to the nearby window ledge. After giving a rather indignant chirp, the little fire-lizard fluttered over to the window sill and sat with her head cocked to one side, watching curiously.*

Paulin watched, entranced, as the little lizard flew over to perch on Leah's shoulder. Giving himself a slight shake, he continued to watch the fire lizard, remarking "I've never seen a fire lizard before... What's her name?"

*Leah couldn't help but smile at him.* "Her name is Taimi." *Without another word, Leah glanced at the fire-lizard before nodding toward the artist. With an excited chirp, eager for the chance to show off, Taimi lept from the sill and was soon flitting around Paulin's head.*

Paulin watched, entranced, as the little fire lizard flittered around his head. Turning back to look at leah, he said self-consciously," Perhaps, when I'm done with your portrait, would you let me sketch her?"

*Leah laughed as Taimi's enthusiastic response as the little green began flitting in more wild and intricate patterns.* "As you can see, she's quite the show off, so I believe she would enjoy that very much..."

Giving his head a little shake, he said to Leah almost apologetically, "I really must start your portrait now, while the light is still good."

"Of course... I wish you luck in getting me to stay still so long." *She smiled, calling to Taimi so that she reluctantly went back to her window sill perch.*

As Leah sat down, Paulin began painting, admiring his subject as he did so. Wanting to make sure he would do a good job - although a part of him wanted to prolong his time with Leah - he went slower than usual, only stopping when hhe noticed that the light had begun to fade and Leah had begun to fidget. Putting down his brush, he apologized, saying "I'm sorry that took so long, but I didn't want to waste the light."

*Leah had been studying the artist rather intently, able to amuse herself reasonably well. She stretched a little, smiling at him.* "I've endured worse, I promise..." *She tilted her head slightly, giving him a curious look.* "I don't believe I ever got your name..."

"My name is Paulin, milady. Journeyman Artist Paulin," he said selfconsciously, diverting his gaze to the fire lizard.

"Paulin, hm? Well, while I'm sure you already know my name, it's Leah, and I'd rather you use it instead of milady. It's too... proper. Besides, as my parents constantly remind me, I'm anything but a lady." *She gave him a grin.*
