Prologue
Atlantis. The first colony on the moon. It consists of nine domes. Each dome serves a purpose to Atlantis’s inhabitants, and each dome is named for its purpose. The nine domes are park, business, residential, star port, command, security, recycling, medical, and main. Under the main dome, which encloses the other eight domes, is a complex maze of mines. Automated robots mine valuable materials—mostly platinum, but there are small pockets of various gems and crystals—from the mine. Atlantis, a technological first, didn’t appear realistic upon its conception.
The colony, built 103 years after World War III, was a cooperative effort from the people of the world. Many major cities were destroyed in the war, and, although the people rebuilt most of them, the world’s population had been decimated, causing the entire world to unite into a single entity. The few car factories that remained were remodeled and used to build robots. These robots were used to aid the remaining population in all ways possible. Because of the advances in medical science, and the use of robots, life expectancy rose to over 250 years old. The world’s population began to increase rapidly, and the need for moon colonization began to present itself. Cities, which had apartments 100 stories high, had begun to overflow with people. This was when the Atlantis project was created. It was the dream of scientists and explorers all over the world. Since the 1950s, scientists have always wanted to go to the moon, and they now had the one key element in accomplishing this. This element was the robots.
The project took nearly 30 years to complete, but in the end, it was more than worth it. Earth could no longer hold more people, and many were eager to get off the green and blue lump in space. It was just too crowded. Now Atlantis sits on the moon in a peaceful state, and most of the inhabitants of Atlantis believe that nothing can possibly go wrong. Most of them would soon find out that they were wrong. Terribly wrong.
One fine summer’s day, an experimental robot was sent into the mine. The robot’s power source, a miniature nuclear fusion reactor, became unstable and erupted with terrible force. The explosion triggered a chain reaction that loosened the anchors that held Atlantis in place. Without its anchors, Atlantis was hurled into space at an incredible speed.
Now the inhabitants of Atlantis search for a way home.
