The sky to the western edge of the horizon was a beautiful array of color: red, pink, blue, and even a splash of purple. Kaeli was busy in her room, trying to catch the natural masterpiece before the light completely faded.
She wetted the brush before dipping it into the pink paint and began to add a touch more color. Behind her, she could hear loud thumping coming through the door. She ignored it until the door flung open, banging against the wall. Turning with a frown, the young girl spied her brother standing in the doorway, a mischevious grin on his face.
"What do you want, oh brother of mine?" Kaeli asked of the fellow, wiping her brush clean and standing to curtsey a greeting. "Why, to find you good lookin' man to marry one so fine." the young man responded, bowing low. This was an ongoing joke the siblings had between each other, and as they stood straight again, they lost the seriousness and smiled to each other.
"I know you're here for something, Donovan. What is it?" The young girl turned her back on her brother and began cleaning up her paints, dissapointed that she wouldn't be able to finish, but satisfied at getting most of the painting complete.
"Kaeli, you're missing Harvest Dance. Father sent me to fetch you. He says that Weston's boy wants a dance with you tonight. So...you coming?" Donovan has walked into Kaeli's room now, and is admiring the view of the bay from her west-facing window. There is one other window to the south that faces the rolling hills covered with wildflowers that lead down to the shoreline.
Kaeli raises an eyebrow at the mention of Bill, the Fisherman's son. "Does he really? Well, you'll just have to tell him I'm not feeling well, because that chubb that calls himself a man won't ever have a chance at dancing with me. He'll just as soon step on my toes as he would eat a pie."
"Oh, come on, sis. Just one dance, and he really can't be all that bad, can he?" Donovan walks over to his younger sister, linking arms with her. "If you won't dance with him, then I'm sure you'll dance with a strapping young fellow like me." He grins, revealing his teeth in a very convincing smile. Kaeli gives in, supressing a smile. "Oh, all right. You got me."
Together, brother and sister walk down the stairs and out into the sea air. Gulls can be heard on the breeze, calling to each other, and music wafts over from the courtyard square where the towns people are dancing in celebration of the harvest that is to begin the next day.
As they arrive, Harold, the siblings' father, strides towards them, a mug of ale in hand. "Glad you finally convinced her lad, there've been many o' young men asking fer her to hand in dancin' " The smell of drunkeness was strong on the old man, and Kaeli exchanged knowing looks with Donovan before the young man brought his father to a table to rest.
One of the dancing bodies entangled himself from the throng and walked up to Kaeli, and she smiled knowingly, for it was the portly Bill, already turning out to be quite like his father, Weston.
"W-would you care to d-dance, Kaeli?" The young man was not comfortable talking to girls, but he was not so unconfident as to not talk to them. The girl nodded yes, and the two joined the throng, Kaeli suppressing the urge to grimace as her toes were trampled unknowingly by the young fellow.
The dancing continued even after the sky began to darken with the oncoming night, and finally Kaeli stopped to rest, retiring to sit on the edge and watch the throng. The young girl's cheeks were flushed from dancing, and she thought just to take some time off to rest a bit...
