It wasn't long before Zyphan saw the trees thinning, and then she burst from the foilage into open air, free from the tangled branches and threatening spaces. She turned back to wait for Scoltun; it seemed he was taking a bit longer that her, but she could still hear his wing beats, so she wasn't worried.
"Come on!! We've made it to the clearing!!" The avian had listened for any helicopters, but only bird-song and forest noise came to her sharp ears. She smiled again, but, wincing, quickly gave up on staying aloft and landed in the soft grass.

Scoltun had indeed slowed down from the trouble he was having flying in the closed space. The larger wings had the advatange of greater burst of speed and more power in terms of height but became a problem when it came to conditions such as these. He landed at the edge of the grass as soon as he cleared the trees.
He could not stop his wings from withering and twitching visibly as he tried to close them behind him. The pain from the ends was involuntarily making his muscles contract making it impossible for him to close his wings behind him. He just hoped it would pass soon. As he approached Zyphan, he asked, "You alright? I think we should wait for a while. Let me take a look at that bandage. I know you were having trouble flying..."

Zyphan looked up as Scoltun came through the trees, and was worried about the condition of his wings. She waved him away form her shoulder, not worried for herself now. "I'm fine. Just acted up a bit from the movement. How are your wings? I'm sorry if the trees were too close for you." And she was sorry. The avian had forgotten that his wingspan was bigger than hers, and he hadn't lived in the forest probably for as long she.
Zyphan took his hand and pulled him over to a rise in the earth where the grass was softer, and pulled him down next to her. Her own wings had gotten hit some too, but it was insignificant compared to what happened to her friend.
"Sit down and relax. Do you want me to do anything? Would a massage maybe help?" She wasn't really sure what to do, since it would be a possibility that his wings would be bruised, but if she could do something, it was better than nothing.

Scoltun followed Zyphan and sat down. He smiled, and was thankful for the kindness she had shown him. He hadn't received much of it in the past few years and he wasn't used to people worrying about him. He shook his head and said, "Thank you, but they will be fine in a while, just a few bruises. I guess it was worth it to avoid capture. Now, what do you want to do?"
He decided he would leave it upto her to decide if she wanted to go after Ayden right away or rest till she was capable enough to fly without a problem. If they went now, and they ran inot a problem, he feared she might not be able to avoid capture in the current state.

"Well, my shoulder isn't doing so good at the moment, so if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to rest up here for a bit." Zyphan pulled her jacket off, and rubbed her hand over the bandage, wincing when the pressure sent a stab of pain through the muscle. "Where are those pain meds at? Your pack or mine?" She knew the incision would heal fine, but it was just an issue of dealing with the pain and still being able to fly without pulling it open every time.
For the time being, all she wanted to do was rest and let the tracker travel downriver a ways before they moved location. She still had full intentions to find Ayden and get him back, but that would take time and planning and focus, none of which she was very good at.

Scoltun nodded in response and took off his pack. If he remembered right, the pain meds were in his pack. He searched around for them and handed them to Zyphan. He closed the pack and said, "I think we should rest in the shade of the trees just in case. Let me take your pack as well..." He extended his hand. He was glad she had decided to rest as he didn't think he could fly very well now that he had got the opportunity to stop and rest his wings.
He looked up and saw the light waning. He guessed they had lost their trackers at the right time as now they could rest thruogh the night and start the search for Ayden tomorrow. He thought for a while and was satisfied that they still had food with them although going to the river for water now would be a bit dangerous.

"Thanks." She popped two pills, then took his hand and followed him to the tree line. She was glad that night was finally here, because it meant they could rest and not worry too much about the choppers coming back for them. "Let's stay until the sun comes up, that way we can rest and the tracker will be long gone by now."
She leaned up against the base of a tree, but decided to take refuge on a wide, low branch instead, taking her pack from Scoltun and using it as a pillow. It felt good to just relax, and open her wings completely. From her vantage point, the female avian watched Scoltun, to see if he would join her in the tree or stay on the forest floor.

Scoltun looked up once before entering the trees as if just to make sure that there was no threat in the skies for them. He nodded and agreed to them resting through the night. He needed to rest his wings in order to be able to fly and Zyphan needed to give the wound a chance to heal a bit. He watched and wait for Zyphan to get in a comfortable position before following her up onto the branch and sat down on the branch letting her have enough space to stretch her legs out towards him.
He looked at her wings and smiled and let his wings drop over behind him as well, giving his muscles some time to relax. He looked at her for some time and felt his worries dissolve for now and a wave of relaxation swept through his body. He said after quite some time, "Why can't they just leave us alone?"

"I don't know. We've done nothing wrong, except exist, and we're tracked down like a pack of animals." Zyphan sat up, turning towards Scoltun, her legs hanging down and her wings still open. "How long have you been running from them? The only reason I know that they're real is because of Ayden..." She paused, lost in thought, wondering what was happening to Ayden wherever the soldiers took him.
She moved a little closer to Scoltun, but didn't know how far would be okay to go. The avian was worried about her friend, and wanted to rescue him as soon as possible, but she didn't know how. "Do you think he's okay wherever he is?" Zyphan's voice was nearly a whisper, and she failed to keep her voice free of the fear she felt over what they must do. -------------------------------- Ayden's mind started working again, and with that came the realization that he wasn't at home anymore with Zyphan, and he was back in the very place that he tried desperately to stay away from, to protect her from.
Opening his eyes, he found both of his feet chained to the floor with five foot long electric chain, which would keep him from warping. A glass window, infused with more electric currents running through chicken wire, allowed him to see out in the corridor. A camera watched his every move from the corner in his cell where a simple cot, sink, and toilet, made up his furniture.
A loudspeaker crackled to life, making him jump, and at the same time movement down the hall caught the jumper's eye, and he pressed closer-without touching- tot he glass wall.

Scoltun looked up as the beautiful avian moved. His attention was always drawn to her whether he wanted to or not. He didn't say anything as she moved closer. He realized she was scared about their situation, how alone she was without Ayden who seemed to have been taking care of her all this while.
He could remember when he was this afraid, being hunted like an animal, not having anyone to turn to, fearing anything that moved around him. He could feel the sadness somewhere lurking deep in his mind. After a few days of staying holed up in a abandoned building, starving but unable to overcome his fear to even go out to look for food, he came to a realization. This was his life now and the sooner he accepted it, the better for him.
He smiled at Zyphan, who was probably going through the same stage or would have been if he was not around either to talk to or to connect with. He took his hand and squeezed in gently smiling still as he spoke, "You don't have anything to be scared about while I am around. He is fine. If they had meant to harm him, they wouldn't have bothered going through that elaborate plan to capture him." He paused, remembering the question she had asked and responded, "I have been running for an year or two now, from them. The day I was reported by a small village as their village being haunted by the devil's son, they have been after me."
((Nice introduction of the prison. You want me to introduce another prisoner for him to interact with? I have an idea about this kind of a "pyro girl". Upto you... ))

((sure, if you want to. i'll let you introduce her in your next post, then i'll put up more of ayden's story.))
Zyphan blushed a little when Scoltun took her hand, but the touch was comforting, as were his words. "Thank you." She whispered, the memories of coming home to an unconcious Ayden refreshing itself in her memory. She was quiet for a few minutes while the thoughts of her capture, escape, and return ran through her mind, bringing with it a brief wave of grief before she let out a sigh and tried to push the unwelcome memories away. To distract herself, she focused on Scoltun's reply.
"That long, huh? So you've always been running from them?" She turned his hand over in hers, tracing the veins under the skin, along with a few scars. If it weren't for him being here, supporting and comforting her, she probably would have just flown after them or allowed herself to get caught or perhaps even flown off and curled up into a little ball, bawling her eyes out.

((Hey, did you post Ayden's profile? I can't find it... ))
A light came on in the 'cell' in front of Ayden's. It was more a freezer than anything else. The front of the cell was full glass. The girl was on the floor right in the middle of cell with her knees to her chest and arms around them. It almost seem she was trying not to touch the walls which had developed a coat of ice. She clenched her eyes as the light came on on the ceiling. The hallway had been dimly lit so she couldn't been seen before.
She looked up and almost screamed seeing someone else in front of her. It was obvious that the temperature was kept almost below freezing in her cell but she seemed to be producing heat enough to sustain her temperature to not freeze to death. She was wearing a jumper suit of a kind, which looked very obviously like a prison suit.
-------------
"Its feels longer... You know, when you live by the day, it feels longer...", he said then looked up and smiled. "So, what had you been doing before you met Ayden. I mean how is it that you never got caught?", he asked.

((no, i didn't. do you want me to, though? i very easily could put one together.))
"I didn't know anything about humans before Ayden found me. I had always lived in the woods, fed on any fruit or vegetable I fould that was edible, and pretty much stayed invisible." Her eyes glazed over a little, seeing things not of the present, but far away in a past world. "He came to me, battered and bruised, and told me to find shelter, a cave, anything. I took him to the waterfall cave, and we stayed there until he was fully recovered, then we set out together, him in the lead, and found the cave we lived in before we were caught. He's been like what I would imagine a big brother would be like, all protective and caring..." Zyphan sniffed a little, and turned away from Scoltun, realizing that she was crying and not wanting to show it.
"He never let me leave his sight, for fear I would get taken by the humans... I never knew what happened to him while he was with them, but he always kept me safe, always made sure I would never have to be afraid of them like he always was. Ayden... He was the best thing that had ever happened to me, and he was always there for me..." Zyphan's voice cracked a little at the end, but she still tried to stay strong, tried to keep the tears from flowing in front of Scoltun. ---------------------------------------- Ayden recoiled a little as the room lit up, but when he saw no threat, he pressed close again. He had seen her kind before; pyros that could melt steel and ran a regular temperature of 108 degrees. The girl seemed frightened, not at all like she had been there as long as he had been the first time. He caught her eye, and nodded, hoping he wouldn't frighten her.
"Can you hear me?"

He nodded and hesitated before speaking. He could see she was not in the best of states right now but what he had to say might comfort her. Even if it didn't it needed to be heard. In his opinion, Ayden had made a mistake. If he guessed right, he thought he could protect her every single moment of her life from all the dangers around them, especially for people like them.
He used his hand to turn her face towards him and looked into her eyes before speaking, "Fear is not weakness, its awareness. It is necessary for us to know who to fear and why. Since you didn't know, you let your curiosity get the better of you and got caught. I am not blaming Ayden for it and I am not blaming you for your capture. I am just saying that you have now learned why we need to stay away from them. I can promise you this, I will always be with you, looking after you, but I will not hide the world from you..."
--------------
The thin girl looked up again at the man in the cell in front of him and nodded in reply. She didn't know what all the apparatus was for but she guessed it was probably in place to keep this man from escaping, just like the cold in her case. She looked at a digital meter on the wall beside her and sighed. It was showing a single number. It was showing the percentage of oxygen in her air-tight cell. It was below the normal level, kept so prevent any kind of combustion. If she could even manage to generate fire in this ice cage, she would burn what little supply of oxygen in the room and would saffocate to death in a matter of minutes. She had been told that any rise in temperaure in her cell and the ventilation overhead would shut off completely leaving her to die unless it was overridden.
She moved her bare feet and was glad to see her body had kept them from being frozen while she slept. She looked up at the man again and asked in a weak voice, "What year is it?"

Zyphan, in need of any sort of comfort at the moment, heard exactly what her mind wanted to hear, and collapsed onto Scoltun, wrapping her arms around his torso, the tears cascading down her cheeks to stain his clothes.
She didn't know what to say, or really what to do. All she knew was that without Ayden she would be lost forever, and that Scoltun would always be there for her, no matter what, which is exaclty what he said, and she trusted that fact. She wiped away some of her tears after a moment, and looked up at his face, searching his eyes and finding a kind of reassurance, a truth, and she smiled a little at what she saw there.
Zyphan still had tears running down her face, but they were of relief now, not pain and fear, and she whispered a quiet, "Thank you," before setting her head on his chest again. Without him here, she didn't know what would have happened if she had come back to find Ayden gone, or else captured alongside him. All the young avian knew was that she was ever grateful to have this wonderful person next to her in the tree to help her with getting her best friend back. -------------------------------- "It's 2021, about halfway through. How long have you been here?" He saw her glance at a dial on the wall, and realized she would be under tight control, if she was as powerul as he had heard.
He wondered how high the voltage was on the glass panel, and put his hand within a centimeter of the glass, but realized it was pretty high. The electric currents were making his hair stand up without touch, and he could easily feel each current running through the glass. He backed off, to his original place, and looked at the girl again, waiting for her answer.
