"Okay, so no rifles and something to kill the pain." She angled herself upwards and gained height, ready for the streak back to her home. "I'll be back soon, Scoltun. Don't worry about me." Zyphan looped back and shot away, waving to the bait-playing avian. "See you at the waterfall!! Make sure noone comes back!!"
And with that, she shot back the way they came, though she stayed within a few feet of the tree tops and kept away from their persuers. She would arrive at her destination in only a few minutes if she kept up this pace, and then the searching would begin... .............................. Zyphan landed on the cliff again, but spying noone below and hearing nothing, she dropped down to the ground and slipped inside. Immediately, she started pulling things from the shelves, looking for what she needed. Food, knives, bandages, painkillers, um...What else was there? Oh yeah... The girl went through the list in her mind, throwing the items into one of the two packs she had found. They could split the load once she got back.
It only took her about ten minutes to get everything, but as she was putting the last box of granola bars into her pack, she heard an engine outside and slamming doors. Quietly, she crept out the side entrance and around to the front, peeking through a dense patch of brush. That truck was there again, though the enclosure in back was now empty. The leader was once again staring at that little device, now and again hitting it, and a skinny guy running after him.
"Sir, it's not completely fixed, there's still-" "SHUT UP!! It's good enough, Atkins. I gotta know where they've gone to." The techy was following the commander around, trying to get a hold on the tracking device. "The blip's nearby, so she should be close. Start looking people!! We've got ourselves a mutant to find!!" Zyphan knew it wouldn't be good to sit around while they were looking for her, so she turned to creep off into the trees a bit more where there'd be more cover and she could take off unnoticed.
"Goin' somewhere, miss?" A rather large, armoured man stood in her path, a gun casually aimed at her chest. "Let's be gettin' back to the boss now, eh? No more flyin' away." Obediently, she turned and walked through the brush at gunpoint, and the commander about lost his head when he caught sight of her.
"Ha!! I knew we'd get her!! But where's the other one? Oh well, we'll get him soon enough. Tie her up, now!!" As soon as his back was turned, however, Zyphan 'sneezed' and the air around her froze, not to mention the soldier behind her. Immediately afterwards, she shot straight up, and angled back towards the trees.
She easily dodged the nets, and flew away from the now-furious commander. Atkins was running around him, trying to get the tracker before he flung it down in rage. His accursed yelling was starting to fade as Zyphan made towards the mountain, wondering how Scoltun delt with his persuers. Hopefully he would be at the waterfall before her, since his task was a lot less than hers.

Scoltun looked for a while as Zyphan turned and went back to the cave hoping there were none waiting back there to ambush her. Once he made sure that none of the soldiers following them had seen her turn around, he slowed down considerably. The wind was helping conserve his energy which he would need for his flight back, this time against the wind.
He let them get close enough when some of them tried to aim at him to stun him to the ground thinking he would be able to sustain gunfire without getting hurt. Scoltun, on the other hand, didn't want to test that theory. He would get out of range before they could shoot at him. After a couple of minutes, when he was about to go over the hill, he suddenly accelerated into a burst of speed. Before the first of the soldiers could run up the hill and get him in sights, Scoltun had turned sharply and around the hill and started on his way back.
When the soldiers crossed over the other side, both the avians were gone. Their faces fell for having lost the trail and wondering what would happen when they reported this back to the commander. As they reported back, the commander screamed at them over the radio and about the other one having gotten away as well. Scoltun was a bit tired from the flight back to the mountain Zyphan had pointed out earlier. He could easily spot the waterfall and soon enough found the cave as well. He swooped into the cave through the water, drenching himself instantly. He tried to stop as soon as he was through, thinking it might be a shallow cave but was surprised to find it big enough to almost accomodate his wings from side to side as well as give some space 'to land'. Once he was threw he flapped his wings in the constricted space to shake off the water and waited impatiently for Zyphan to show up.

Zyphan rocketed through the waterfall after not seeing Scoltun outside anywhere, and landed hard but easily on the opposite side, soaking wet and shaking the water from her wings. She saw Scoltun also trying to dry off, and held up her find.
"I got everything. The commander guy had come back when I was done, though, and gave me some problems, but I'm fine and I've got all we need." She chuckled, remembering what she did to one of the soldiers. "I think one of them will have to be defrosted, though. He'll have frostbite by the evening if they don't."
Zyphan set the bag down on the cave floor, and pulled out the knife, antiseptics, needle, and thread. "I have no idea what exaclty to do, here, so...I guess you're kinda on your own. Just tell me what I need to do." She was alittle panicked about having this guy slice open her shoulder and remove the tracker, but it needed to be done, and she had to keep it together long enough for him to get it out. I can do this. Just stay calm and think good thoughts. She tried to keep her mind away from the image of knife on skin, the blood, and the pain.

He was beginning to worry as the time between his arrival and hers' grew. A wave of relief washed over him when he saw Zyphan make it through the waterfall carrying a bag. He heard about her encounter with the commander and smiled, "That should keep them busy and give us some more time. This is a very well hidden place. Even if they used the tracker, they would think it was malfunctioning showing us 'inside' the mountain."
It had worked out wonderfully. He nodded at her and said, "Ok, first, take a couple of painkillers before we start. We will wait for a few minutes for the effect to kick in so you won't feel as much pain. Mind you without anesthesia it is still gonna be bad." He took off his shirt and put it aside to dry off, then his pants and the shoes, leaving him in his shorts. He looked up and shrugged, "Well, unless you wanna catch a cold... besides I can do much with your top still covering the tracker."

She hesitated a moment, then turned her back and stripped off her jacket and top, holding the slightly damp top to her chest before turning around and popping a few painkillers. "If you want, there's some dry wood in the back of this cave for a fire. That way our clothes will dry faster." Zyphan smiled a little, remembering when she first arrived here. "I used to live here, until Ayden happened upon me one day, and I went to stay with him. But, to stay in the present, shall we get started on the 'surgery'?"
She really wasn't looking forward to this at all, and her heart was about to leap out of her chest. Still, the young avian tried to keep calm as she waited for whatever it was that would be coming next.

"Really?", he said cheering up a bit and turned around to look for the wood. He hadn't been able to see it before as the light was lesser inside the cave and his eyes hadn't got adjusted to it. He quickly made a fire and lit it up using the pieces of bark off the wood to get the fire start. He was fortunate enough to have a lighter in his pocket. It took some time but soon enough there was a small fire burning in the corner. He laid down his clothes near it welcoming the heat himself.
"You beter put your clothes to dry as well. We will do the 'surgery' here where I can see a bit better. Ok", he looked back at her and smiled seeing she was still wearing her wet jeans. He didn't say anything as he thought she might still be comfortable around him. He took the knife and kept so that the balde would be sterilized by the fire.

She knew her jeans needed to be dried as well, but she wasn't ready to strip in front of this guy, and be only in her undies and bra while he silced through her shoulder. "I'll keep my clothes on, but being by the fire will most definitely be better." Zyphan moved closer, and positioned herself so her jeans would dry and so he could see better.
"Whenever you're ready, Scoltun. Don't do the countdown thing, it makes it worse to bear pain because then I'm all tense and ready-but-not-ready for it." By now, she was really freaked out inside, and she hoped he couldn't feel her extremely rapid pulse once he began the operation.

He picked up the knife from the fire, the blade no doubt hot enough to even burn the flesh. He walked over to the entrance of the cave and stuck the knife out into the jet of water. The knife sizzled and cooled down. Scoltun had now taken every precaution to sterilize the knife. He picked up the antiseptic and poured it the little bump on her shoulder, using his hand to clean the skin. He then rinsed the blade with the liquid and kept a firm hand on her shoulder between where he was going to cut and her neck.
"Try not to move, ok?", he said quietly and prepared himself to but into her flesh. He knew she would move instinctively so he would hold her still if he could. He took a deep breath, a warning if she had heard it that he was about to start. He planned what he would do. As she had asked, without a warning of any kind, he kept the sharp edge of the knife below the circular tracker and began to try to cut a circular portion just at its edge to try and slip it out of her to avoid cutting too much of the skin.

Zyphan nodded, too panicked to speak, and tried to keep her thoughts from straying to everything that might go wrong. But as soon as the knife pierced her skin, she gasped at the pain, and instinctively her muscles tightened, though she sat still as Scoltun made the cut. She felt the telltale trickle of blood down her back, though it wasn't enough to taint the air with the raw, metallic smell of blood.
As he continued, she thought about how deep it might be, and this worried her a little. "Scoltun," Zyphan's voice was a little shaky, but she kept it together enough to not pull away and tell him to just forget the whole thing. "How...how deep do you think it is? Just under the skin, maybe?"

As he finished making the cut, his hand relaxed. He had held it strained so he wouldn't cause any problems while making the cut or cause her too much pain. He didn't reply to her question immediately. When he had inspected it before, he knew it was under a layer of muscle otherwise he could have crushed it and made it useless right then. He didn't want to say that as he thought she wouldn't respond wellafter hearing that. "Just bear it a bit longer ok? I will try to be as quick and painless as possible.", he said trying to comfort. Her even thought that was his intention, he wasn't a doctor and he knew it wasn't exactly going to be so painless.
He moved the knife and dug the end much deeper now into the skin and through the muscle. Now that he was in, he intended to finish the job so she would get it over with at one go. "Jus a few more seconds Zyphan...", he said to her as he began to dig the knife deeper to get it under the tracker and pry it out of her through the cuts he had created.

Zyphan gritted her teeth as he dug the knife into her shoulder. Her hands balled into fists, and her nails left crescent-shaped cuts in her palms. Every muscle in her body wanted to recoil from the pain, but she forced herself to endure it, for the benefit it would bring both of them.
"Just...hurry up...please." Her voice was strained as she dealt with the pain of having a knife dig into her shoulder. Zyphan didn't know how much longer she could last, and she hoped it wouldn't last much longer. She barely heard a word he said, but just having his voice in the background of her panicked mind made the pain seem a bit more tolerable.

Scoltun winced as he probed around the tracker with the knife, to try to pry it out. The but he had made earlier had become longer due to his actions. He could imagine how painful it would be for Zyphan despite the painkillers. He kept reassuring her with his words to keep her calm and it seemed to be working, for now at least. Before he knew it, a side of the tracker emerged on the side of the cut he had made.
He let go her shoulder and pulled it out with his hand. He dropped it on the side and quickly got to work to reduce the pain. "Its out Zyphan, its done...", he spoke quickly and started cleaning the wound. He then went onto bandage the area properly. The blood had stopped flowing so the bandage would stay. He had kept himself from getting distacted by her wings as he had been facing them the whole time. He couldn't help but touch them now, moving his hand across the smooth texture. "You did good Zyphan...", he said to her.

As the tracker was removed and the bandage applied, the pain lessened to a throb, and she could breathe a bit easier. "Thank you." Zyphan sighed now that the ordeal was done, and was even more relaxed when she felt him gently brush her wings. It was an odd feeling, though, because she had never had anyone do this before, and Ayden found the touch of feather to be a tad unnerving to him, so he had taken a tendency to not touch her wings, or the feathers at the nape of her neck.
After a time, she turned to him, a curious look on her face, though what she said next was completely the opposite to what she was thinking about at the moment. "What will we do with it now? Attatch it to some animal so they think we're still on the move?" It was the best thing to do now, after their clothes dried and the pain of from the incision went down, of course.
((the neck feathers were a late installment. i'm reading hawksong right now, and the avians in that book have feathers at their neckline, intertwined with the last few strands of hair.))

(( Interesting addition ))
Scoltun was caught a bit off guard as she turned around and asked the question. He had forgotten aboout the tracker for a moment as he seemed to be feeling the beautiful wings in front of him. She had let him do it too, for a while, before turning around. "Huh? Oh, I think we have some time before they figure out we are in a cave. Besides, I was thinking we should throw the tracker into the water after making sure it will float. The flow of the water will carry it further away. With another animal, a land animal, you never know how long they would stay distracted. What do you think?"
He hadn't really planned it out and was thinking it over as he told his plan to her.

She considered it for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, I think that would be good. We can do it later, though. Right now I want to rest and get our clothes dried." She could feel the painkillers doing their part, but there was still a painful throb, and all she wanted to do now was relax and let the pain pass.
Zyphan watched the fire for a while, still holding her top to her chest, wondering where they had taken Ayden. But it wasn't long before her thoughts strayed back to Scoltun, and what happened when he stroked her wings. She wondered what was going through his mind at the moment, what he was thinking of while he did that, but she didn't really care. The feeling was very relaxing, and she stretched her wings out, allowing them to rest on either side of her.
((zyph's wings were pulled up before, but now they're open. is this gonna be another romance? just curious since that's what it seems like so far... o.O ))
