Twilight. The time of day where life and death meet, and life gives way to death. The time of day where the sun begins to slowly die, and the landscape is bathed in purples and pinks and reds while he slowly passes on. But its not a time complete devoted to death...for when the sun dies he gives birth to his sister the moon....
Iris continued walking along the small interstate 'highway' which lead out of Austin. She backpedaled with her thumb outstretched, signaling to passing cars that she was a Hitch-hiker, or 'hicther' as they were more often refereed to as. The wind kicked up and threw her hair around in a flurry whenever a car would pass her up- and pass her by.
"God d**nit...won't one of you stop for me..." She says as her grip tightens on the strap small duffel bag that lays at her side. "Come on...just a ride to the next town...come on...one of you has to stop..." She keeps muttering to herself as she continues to step backward.

((Hey. I'm new on here. This is first post so here I go. )) Mark drove through the dark night with his high-beams on. He didn't pay much attention to his surroundings as they were merely silhouettes to him due to the blackness which surrounded his car. He sat casually in his Black Mazda RX-8, one hand on the clutch, his other on the steering wheel, tapping to the beat of the System of a Down song he had playing. He continued when he saw a figure up ahead, standing on the side of the road, not but 50 feet ahead of him. As his car rolled onward he realized that the woman's thumb was pointed out, showing that she was hitching a ride. He let go of the accelerator and came to a fast stop only 10 meters ahead of the woman, pulled off on the side of the road. Turning down the music, he rolled down the window quietly and waited for her to approach...

"Thank god..." Iris mutters rushing up to the sleek sports car that pulled over to, hopefully, give her a ride to the next town. She stpped near the window and bended over to see the man sitting inside.
"Hey there stranger..." Her voice had a texas twang to it. She smiled, her charming mischievious smile. Her right hand rested between her legs as her left held her duffel over her shoulder.

He peered through the rolled down window at the woman, who seemed to be fairly attractive. He returned her greeting, with a slight southern accent from being raised in North Carolina. "Howdy there. What's a fine lass like you doing all the way out here alone?" He smiled pleasantly at her. "Hop in. You can put your bag in the back seat or the trunk, whichever suits you best." His nervousness had been relieved. Even if the woman did try something violent he could still easily overpower her. He abandoned that though, thinking she looked too innocent, and the smile returned to his face.

Iris exulted on the inside, it was visible through her face as she beamed at the driver, and opened the door. She placed her duffel in the backseat and sat down, biefly showing the tattoo on the small of her back. As she shut the door she began to speak.
"I jus' had to get out of mah boyfriends way is all..." She says with a visible paleness coming quickly to her features. She looked at Mark as the door closed and smiled, "Abusive relationship..." She pauses to catch her breath. "Ah'm headin' to Pheonix to catch up with some family..."

As she climbed in he was able to see her much better, now observing the tattoo on her back. "Phoenix you say? Convenience for us both, 'cause that's where I'm headed too." He smiled plesantly, now that he had broken the ice. "Since We're gonna be on this drive together, we might as well get to know each other. I'm Mark. It's nice to meet you."
As he said those final words, he shifted the car out of park and into first gear, then accelerating quickly, he shifted to the next gear as his Mazda roared forward. The lights in the roof of the car dimmed and then suddenly shut off, leaving only the digital clock and the barometer to illuminate the interior of the car. Ahead of them both, was the vast two lane road that headed to Pheonix...

"Awsome...well mah names Iris..." She says with a chuckle, "Odd name I know..." She smiles at him, the clock illuminating her face in a strange way. She yawned leaned back a bit, without moving the passenger seat at all of course.
"So why're ya headin' to pheonix?" She asks, an attempt at sparking up a conversation. Her eyes playfully make their way over to Mark, periodically glancing at the road ahead of them.

He tilted his head slightly yowards Iris. "Heh, not too wierd actually. I like it. As for why I'm headed towards Phoenix, I was offered a job there for Bank of America. And, I'm being restationed at Fort Huachuca. So I figure I may as well live closer to it then farther away." He smiled looking at the clock. 11:53
He glanced at the road ahead but looked at Iris directly. "I'm in the Army, in case you didn't tell by now." Still smiling he stared at the blackness ahead of him, changed only by his head lights.
He looked down at the barometer, noticing that he was only going 69 mph in an 85 mph zone. There were no cars behind him. None ahead. He made a s**t-faced grin, grabbed the clutch and pressed down on the accelerator, quickly speeding up to almost 90....95.....100.....He let go of the accelerator and the car began to drift down the road, slowing down slightly with each passing second and once he had gone down to 85 again he activated cruise control.

"Military eh? Thats interesting..." Iris says, glancing at him. When he starts speeding up she shudders visibly, and braces herself against the seat of the car. When she realizes he's coasting she relaxes a bit.
Nice car... she thinks, looking around. He must've put alot of work into it at any rate.

"Yeah, it's always been pretty interesting. The whole aspect of it. But I get great benefits from it. I'm practically paid to retire." He chuckled. He saw Iris shudder as he sped up. He now looked out the window, to the black nothingness outside his car, and then straight at Iris. "I apologize if that unnerved you in anyway." He smiled light-heartedly at Iris.
As he continued driving normally, his car stuttered and turned off. Now moving silently along the freeway, while slowing down at the same time. His headlights shut off, the digital clock built into the dashboard turned off. Everything. There was no light. He cursed loudly as this happened and made failed attempts to pull the key out, put it back in and start back up. It was no use as he couldn't find the keyhole. "Crap..." He muttered angrily and slammed his hands against the steering wheel. He looked over to the silhouette that barely existed of Iris. "Please tell me you have a flashlight..."

Iris nodded and reached around the seat to unzip her duffel bag. From it she removed a cylinderical tube. She shook it for a bit before pushing a button, causing it to emit a long beam of moonlight.
"Your lucky I own a moonbeam..." She says with a laugh. "One that doesn't run out of energy."

He sighed deeply, relieved that she had the brilliant light. Able to see once more he forced the keys back into the ignition and turned the car on. Satisfied, Mark accelerated quickly back to 85 and reset cruise control. "Thanks." he smiled.
Driving, he felt a question that he continously wanted to ask, though he didn't want to be nosey or make Iris uneasy. He decided to ask anyway. Nervously he began, "So, um... this boyfriend of yours...what, uh...what exactly did he do?" He didn't look at Iris, just stared a the road ahead.

Iris looked away suddenly and became incredibly quiet fast. "That...is...uh...somethin' I don' wanna talk 'bout right now..." The girl says, looking back out the window as she turns off her moonbeam, and places it in her lap sideways. She bites her lip, a bead of sweat rolls down her forehead.
Iris crawls into herself once again, and continues to stare back out the window.

He took a deep breath and swallowed loudly. Then, nervously, he began again, "Ah...okay, then...Sorry for asking..." He felt kind of guilty for asking in the first place, as he was trying to be as friendly as possible. When Mark looked over at her again, he noticed her uneasiness. She seemed almost scared, at first look and realized by Iris' facial and body expressions that she really did not want to talk about it.
Mark wanted to keep talking. When in the presence of others, he disliked silence. It made the environment feel awkward to him, as if there was something entirely wrong with the world. Like he was caught in an early 1900's movie with no sound. He wanted to say something, but he had nothing. Every time he opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out but more breath. He eventually gave up and let silence take it's place in the void between him and Iris.

Iris sighed, "A-Ah'm sorry...jus' ...y'know?" She says, looking at him. Her eyes glistened with some tears and she quickly looked away to wipe at them, and back out the window. "Ah jus' want to forgot..."
