“Six kills and we still haven’t caught this guy. Either he’s just that good or we’re getting sloppy, Harker.”
“Let’s go with the former. Now get moving. I want to get back to the station and get back to work.”
“Sure you don’t want to come inside with me? I could be a few minutes.”
“Positive. I’d much rather stay in the car than be alone with you in your apartment.”
“Ouch. Harsh.”
“That’s what you get for drinking all of my coffee. Now move.”
“All right, all right! I’m going! Jeez.”
Natalie Harker watched out of the car window as her partner Jake Jansen made his way into his apartment complex. She sighed softly, rolling down the window for some fresh air while she waited. The two of them had been working the same case for a month, hunting a serial killer known as Warlock as he terrorized the town. The murders had been brutal and spaced out throughout the weeks, all of them occurring within the same city. As members of the homicide unit, Natalie and Jake had been working endlessly, looking over pictures and interrogations and what little evidence they had. The two of them were so exhausted by their efforts that it wasn’t any surprise when Jake had come in that morning without his badge, having forgotten it in his apartment. Natalie waited several minutes for Jake to get his badge and get back to the car, beginning to get angry after fifteen minutes had passed by. However, it was just then that she heard gunfire, immediately followed by a bullet that lodged itself in the rear passenger side door of the car. Natalie instinctively ducked down behind her own door, her eyes scanning the apartment building for any sign of the shooter since the bullet had come from that direction. She grabbed her gun and made sure it was fully loaded before radioing in for backup and getting out of the car, careful to stay covered whenever she could. She cautiously made her way into the apartment building, where only a few people seemed to notice anything wrong. She ran to the elevator, getting in and riding up to Jake’s floor. She hurried to his door, frowning when she found it open. Her heart leapt up into her throat as she made her way inside, gun poised and ready.
“Jake? Jake, are you here? Answer me!”
She checked every room for any signs of him or anyone else, the bedroom her final stop. It was there that she found Jake Jansen, lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood. He was sliced and hacked in a style that Natalie immediately recognized, a pattern that had been burned into her brain after looking over dozens of crime scene photos. After hurriedly making sure that no one else was in the room, all the while requesting an ambulance on the radio, Natalie knelt down by her partner, checking his pulse with a shaking hand. Her eyes widened when she felt it, weak and faint but still there.
“Jake! Jake, can you hear me?”
Natalie nearly started crying as Jake slowly opened his eyes, staring up at her. His eyes were glazed over in pain as he tried to speak, but Natalie quickly shook her head.
“Save your strength. You’re going to be ok. Just hold on, all right?”
Jake made a horrible gurgling sound, blood trailing from his mouth and down his cheek.
“Nat… it’s…”
He stopped, coughing violently as he choked on his own blood, his eyes bulging slightly as he stared up at Natalie. Natalie grabbed hold of his hand, shaking her head.
“Jake… no… you’ve got to hold on. Just a little longer…”
But it was too late. Natalie heard one last gurgling breath before her partner stopped moving, staring at her lifelessly.
*Natalie Harker walked into the building on her first day back at work, not talking to anyone and just nodding when people welcomed her back. She headed straight for the chief’s office, not even glancing at Jake’s empty desk. She paused outside the door, listening as she heard the chief talking to someone.*
“Your partner’s name is Nate Harker. Today’s Harker’s first day back at work after a two week leave so tread lightly. I doubt Nate’s going to be in a good mood today. So, any questions? If not, I’ll show you to your desk.”
*Natalie just rolled her eyes, changing her mind as she headed back to her desk, ignoring the empty desk right in front of it. She immediately started dragging out files on the Warlock case, eager to find the guy and give him a piece of her mind.*
