"Really? I would have thought you'd have had the most choice in what you wanted to do."

*Leah looked at him in genuine surprise.* "How did you arrive at that conclusion?"

Paulin shrugged. "I always figured that Lords and Ladies could do pretty much whatever they wished... and I mean, its not as if you're Lord Oterel's only heir. There's still your siblings. I just thought that you could have your choice as to what to do."

*Leah shook her head, looking away with an expression of disgust.* "I wish that was true... It's all about politics and reputations... An unruly daughter brings disgrace to a family as popular as mine... Then there's the whole marriage issue... Marriages form alliances between Holds... So I'm expected to marry some pompous Holder just to make my family's life a little easier and richer. And then after that, my oh so loving husband will expect me to have a gigantic brood of children to take care of while he has dozens of mistresses and hundreds of half-bloods running about..."

Paulin grimaced. "That does sound rather... unappetizing." He considered for a moment. "Wouldn't you be able to marry who you wanted? Since it seems to me like you wouldn't have many suitors, given your... unique personality, and there's always your more plaible siblings to cement alliances. From what I've heard, your family would be happy to be rid of someone as 'unruly' as yourself, no matter who you married."

"There's some truth to that I suppose... They certainly don't care about my marriage as much as they care about my siblings'. They've grown desperate trying to find a decent suitor. But still, whether I live in their Hold or someone else's, they still have to claim relation to me. They can't very well let everyone know that they have a daughter who married a kitchen drudge or the like." *Leah shook her head bitterly.* "No, they're more concerned with reforming me and making me into something less disgraceful instead of simply getting rid of me."

Paulin shrugged. "A kitchen drudge, I can see that being disgraceful. But how about, say a harper? Would your family be opposed to that?"

*Leah thought about it a moment.* "I don't know... The possibility never came up... They've been so stuck on surrounding Holds..." *She shrugged.* "It doesn't really matter at the moment... They have yet to find Holder or harper willing to stick around for a woman like myself."

Paulin grinned. "Maybe you should try looking among the painters... I know some who would be more than willing to tolerate someone as beautiful as you."

*Leah couldn't help but blush, which was very uncharacteristic of her.* "Out of all those descriptive words we were talking about earlier, I don't believe that one's ever been used for me..."

"Really?" Paulin asked, genuinely surprised. Grinning, he said, "Well, of course, you probably drove away everyone who would have said it before they got a chance to."

*Leah gave a bit of a nervous laugh.* "Perhaps... Or perhaps you're just too much the artist, able to find beauty in anything..."

Paulin tilted his head sideways. "You seem uncomfortable. Why?"

*Leah shook her head with a smile.* "I know how to deal with pompous idiots... but I've never really spent time with someone like yourself."

Paulin grinned. "Well, its always good to know I'm not bunched up with those kind of people... the people who don't think you're beautiful."
