N'shyll hurried to the Hatching Ground with Borjath. The eggs were supposed to hatch soon, and the thought alone filled her with a thrill. When they reached the cavern Borjath flew up to a place in the green rank, N'shyll clinging to her tightly. She could feel not only Borjath's humming, but also that of all the other dragons.
She looked at the expectants on the sand, male and female both. Most were younger than she, some her own age, and a couple older. She knew most of them, as they had been born and raised in the Weyr, unlike her. The others had to have left home as she had.
N'shyll remembered vividly when she had been standing where they were now, anxiously awaiting the eggs to hatch. She had known even then she was destined to fly with dragons.
At last, one of the twitching eggs cracked.

The first head to poke out from an egg was that of a bronze. Other colors followed, each dragonling looking around and tumbling after the those in the sand once free from their shells.
Most of the expectants showed eagerness to impress a hatchling, though a few did hang back, obviously uncertain about things. Such people were usually left without a dragon partner.

Setros had been in High Reaches for only a few months, but had already earned the trust of many. He felt he had finally found a home.
He was in the cave, watching the dragons come forth into the world for the first time. He had come to get a partner, but he didn't know if a dragon would be impressed by him. This was his first time seeing baby dragons. He had just recently decided he wanted a dragon, even though he as a little older than most candidates.
He was watching with a strange satisfaction in his heart. He liked what he was seeing, despite the fact of a huge gold queen dragon on the ground with all of them. Then, to his left, one of the eggs that were by him began to shake and crack.
He got by that one and knelt down as his new white cloak he had gotten for this particular occassion fell around him. He wanted to see this one as it came out, it seemed different to him.
Setros just sat in front of the egg watching it hatch. He was quite excited, and then with one final push the dragon came out forcing its wedge-shaped head through.
It squinted its many fauceted eyes up at Setros. Setros felt wierd then, like all that mattered in the world was this gragon barely over half his size. It started squirming to get out. It finally just rolled out of the egg right in front of Setros. He looked down at it as it yawned and revealed its small fangs. It looked up at him again and seemed to smile. It seemed a little smaller than other dragons, but it was definitely a dragon, a blue one at that.
Setros felt weird looking at this new dragon, as it just kept looking at him. It finally got up and started trying to walk around.
'My name is Shyam!' came a voice that Setros hadn't heard with his ears, but his mind.
'I'm hungry,' came the voice again as Setros realized it was the dragon speaking.
The dragon itself was about chest height to him, but the other dragons that were beginning to hatch were a little bigger than him, all different colors too.
"Your hungry?" he asked, not quite sure of what to feed this new dragon. He wasn't aware that as the other dragons hatched, they were going to other people all around him until finally everyone left on the grounds that was there for the Impression was escorted out as Shyam and Setros were the only ones left on the Hatching Ground....
(This should do. I'm not modifying this again. I know this is right this time. I just finished the first book.)

N'shyll and Borjath flew to a cliff once they'd left the cave to watch the newly Impressed - not that there was much to see. N'shyll still liked to though, it was her chance to figure out who all she would need to greet and/or congratulate when she got a chance to.
Quietly she stood, rubbing Borjath's eye ridge as the dragon told her the names of the new dragonlings and their riders. Yes, she would make sure that any newcomers got a proper welcome, not just the boring lessons taught to all dragonfolk.

It wasn't long for Setros to realize that he had to follow the other people who had Impressed a dragon. Setros had caught up with them rather quickly with the new hatchling on his heels.
As the group walked, being led by someone that Setros could not see, they finally came to a banquet hall. There several tables were set up with one long table at the end of the room parallel to the others.
Several people began to sit down at the head table and Setros recognized the Weyrleader immediately.
"So, the older dragonriders sit there," he said to himself as Shyam starting trying to get his attention again.
"Alright already," he said with a laugh as he started scratching the ridge below his Setros's eye. He obviously found it very pleasurable.
Setros saw a few trays of meet laying on each table, uncooked. These must have been for the new dragons.
He grabbed a few from one table and started to feed Setros as he sat down and everyone else was filing into the hall....

((Well, which exact time though? Before Dragonflight? During Dragonflight? The seven Turns between Dragonflight and Dragonquest? During Dragonquest? Gah... And what about having a female green rider? How are we going to make that fit?))
