"I'll tell you what," Professor Banks said. "I'll get a transcript of my criminal record, and we'll compare notes. I'm fairly sure the streets of London are meaner than the ones in this town. And I had to do it all without access to guns, too." If this guy thought he could intimidate him, he had another thing coming... when he had been Rick's age he had gotten into some pretty serious trouble.
Alira looked back and forth between the two. This was unproductive in the extreme, and she had to do something about it. She cleared her throat to call attention to herself and then said, "If you two are done measuring, zip up so we can get back to the lesson." Even though she was technically a student rather than a princess in this world, she couldn't keep the note of regal authority out of her voice.

Hurray! What was it!? (Note: I've become a biblioholic. Be warned!) Robin Cook's Mutation. He usually writes medical thrillers, but this one's got more horror influences... it was inspired by Frankenstein. Kind of tame in the scares department until the last few chapters, though. I have another question about the rp. When we go into the other world and then come back, how much time passes? Is it the same amount of time or does no time pass? Just wondering. For every month that passes in the other world, one week passes in our world. So there's a bit of a difference... a year there is only a couple of months here, which will be understandably disorienting for our characters when they come back to the "real world" for the last leg of the adventure after spending nearly a full year in the other world.

(Sorry. Had a busy week.)
Professor Banks glared at Rick for a few moments, then said, "First of all, don't place any emphasis on the word 'sir'. It's disrespectful. What you're basically saying is 'With all due respect, go f**k yourself'... and I'd be a lot more inclined to accept that if you weren't such a bloody coward that you have to preface it with a term of false respect."
He smiled slightly as he added, "And secondly, you should be thankful that real vampires don't exist. A real vampire would likely rip your throat out just to shut you up." Banks had had people like Rick in his class almost every semester since he had started teaching... they were a dime a dozen, and there was only one way to deal with them. Humiliate them, and they shut up.
Alira smiled as well. There was some steel in this teacher... that would be useful if things went the way she thought they were going to.

I kinda prefer the slower pace here. As busty as I've been lately, I doubt I'd have time for a larger site.

A village somewhere is being sorely deprived of its idiot, Alira thought as she started reading the so-called "facts" in the mythology textbook, which was trying to convince her that vampires didn't like garlic. Vampires seasoned everyone they ate with garlic. They absolutely loved it. She flipped carelessly through the book, stopping briefly -- with a disgusted expression on her face -- at a picture of a green dragon. There were five colors of dragons available for this artist to get right, and he still had to go and pick a color that never occurred in nature? And the teacher was proclaiming this cart full of manure to be fact?
Closing the book, she looked around. The first thing she saw was the boy in front of her, turned around in his chair so he could look up her skirt. She was wearing a very short skirt, with the intention of flaunting her body, so she couldn't really be angry at him. She simply smiled and invited him to see if it tasted as good as it looked. He got a stricken look on his face and turned back around. It had been the same with almost every man she had met in this world... her forwardness scared the hell out of them, for some reason. The women were even worse... apparently, there was some cultural taboo among these backward people about people of the same gender having intimate relations. Alira loved women... she didn't get why there was something wrong with this at all.
She looked around at the rest of the class. The warrior had taken off his leather armor and looked like he was trying to relax, but Alira could sense his anger boiling just beneath the surface. She wasn't a full-fledged empath like her cousin Seldona, but she did get flashes of strong emotion from the people around her every once in a while. There was something on the warrior's arm, but she couldn't see it clearly at this angle. It looked like a tattoo of some sort, so it was probably the emblem of whatever unit he served with.
"Is my class interrupting your conversation?" Professor Banks snapped. Alira followed his gaze to the people sitting just behind the warrior... the girl with pink hair she had noticed earlier, and an embarrassed-looking boy.
"Sorry," the boy said. Alira listened half-heartedly as the teacher asked him his name -- it was Troy -- and told him to be quiet.
The teacher got her full attention again as he addressed the class at large. "So, now that you know some vampire folklore, how does modern pop culture try to subvert the established myths and legends surrounding vampires?" Alira watched as a legion of hands went up. Hers stayed down... she knew very little about modern pop culture, having just arrived in this universe a few weeks ago. In fact, she still hadn't quite grasped the concept of long-distance travel without horses, and was rather afraid of these things the locals called "cars".
(OOC: If anyone has an answer to Banks' question, feel free. Ape's character will probably want to show off his intelligence, and even if Rosy doesn't have anything to say as BB she can certainly RP Troy's response.)

Alira watched from the back of the classroom as the other students walked in. The people of this world were endlessly intriguing, often making bizarre fashion statements that Alira feared she would never fully understand. Like the young man that had just walked in... he had some sort of greasy material holding his hair in place, and was wearing modified leather armor in a place where combat was extremely unlikely to occur.
Still, the leather made Alira identify with him immediately... he was a warrior, much like herself. She would have to get to know him better. A girl with pale skin who had dyed part of her hair pink walked in a few moments later. The pink hair was yet another example of a bold fashion statement, though if it meant anything in particular Alira had no idea what that was. The look certainly worked for her... she was pretty, in the way that many very young women look good but don't realize it or are ashamed of it for some reason.
Alira never got that... this girl was quite attractive, but chose to cover it up with rather conservative clothing and act in an introverted manner that would turn most suitors off. Alira had once, shortly after arriving in this world, heard someone say "If you've got it, flaunt it." She was a devout believer in this philosophy, and didn't understand why someone would wear something like that almost comically enormous hoodie when they really had nothing to be ashamed of underneath it.
An older man walked in. He was making a bold fashion statement too, but what his clothing seemed to say was "I'm homeless." Tweed didn't really do much for Alira.
"Welcome to Folklore and Mythology 101," he said in an accent not unlike that of the men of Aberforth in Alira's home universe. "I'm Professor Banks, but you don't care about that. Every year it's the same... you're here about the sodding vampires. Open your books to, ironically enough, page 101, and let's get started."
(OOC: Okay, that's hopefully enough to go on. I didn't really supply a lot of stuff to respond to, but the pace will pick up later. I just suck at starting threads.)

I'll come back to The Conclave as soon as I have time. As for books, I did finish one so I should post about it there.

Will start the thread tomorrow or Wednesday, Rosy. I planned to start it today, but overslept and couldn't get to it with all the other sh** I had to do. I used to live in a town like that, but it was in North Carolina so, well, worse.

Ape and I are in Ohio! Just thought that was kind of funny. We could make up a college. And a mascot. That would be lots-o-fun. And it could be really really stupid. Like, Luther State College, home to the Fighting Chinchillas. Idk. I'm up for that. Especially the Chinchilla thing, because it fits almost exactly the sense of humor that I'm going for with this. Well, it'd be you writing it. Just because I started this doesn't give me permission to godmod once we're underway.

Yay sounds good. And it doesn't have to be an Edward, but I loath how obsessed people have become. I mean, I've read the books and liked them and the movies aren't TERRIBLE but... Seriously people? Especially my friends. I feel like shooting them some days. ((And I'm Team Jacob... *shifty eyes*)) I'm Team Alice. I'd love to see Kristen Stewart and Ashley Greene making out. If they have magic they can do it themselves, otherwise they'll need Alira's help. I was leaving the name of the college ambiguous due to me being the only person involved who's never been to Ohio, but in the book series it's Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. And the class is Folklore & Mythology 101. Everyone who is named in the prophecy is a Chosen One. I still have to work out which roles your characters might play, although BB does have some similarities in looks and personality with The Witch Queen from the books, so if you don't object to her having latent magical abilities that really freak her out when they first show themselves then we can go with that for her. Professor Banks is The Teacher, and Alira is The Emissary, so they're both Chosen Ones as well. Yeah, sure. That sounds good. I'm still gonna try and drag Eldae and Kait in, and Novalyyn sounded interested and just hasn't posted a character yet, so we might get more people before things get underway... but if we don't, I think we can manage it just the three of us.

I'm going to make a vampire character if that's all right with you Pinata. Like, a super-ultra lame vampire that stalks my main character because he wants to make her "his queen". But that'll be much later, cuz I'm busy right now lol. LOL. Sort of picking on Twilight, I take it? Sounds pretty good actually, I'll try to help facilitate working it in. Might need to switch around some vampire names so that an Edward makes more sense among all those Italian names, though. And yes, this is looking interesting with all these brooding characters. But there should still be some humor, Ape's character seems to have the potential to be a good deadpan snarker. And if things get too grim I can always bring in Nathan McCain from the book series... every sentence that comes out of his mouth is a joke.

Okay, here's what we need to know about your character going in. Name: Race/Species: Gender: Age: Weapon(s) of choice: (Note that since part of this RP does take place in the modern world, you can have guns or other things that an American civilian would conceivably have; no high explosives, but other than that you can bring pretty much anything into the World of Myth with you if it fits your character. There's gotta be a valid reason why you're packing heat at school, though. ) Previous paranormal experience: (If your character has had something weird happen to them before, or displayed a strange talent or supernatural ability at some point in their lives, post it here. But keep in mind not to make superpowers too... superpowered, because your character will be untrained in how to use them at first and won't be very good at doing anything useful with them. Also, limit of one superpower per character please.) Skills: (Just put any skill your character has, even if it doesn't seem useful at first. For example, if you're a cheerleader, mention it... their acrobatic/gymnastic training helps with running, jumping and climbing.) Appearance: (What your character looks like, with as much or as little detail as you want.) History: (Note that history is optional, since many of the characters being posted are in their late teens or early twenties and haven't had much opportunity to do anything important. If you can think of a good backstory for your character then bring it on, but you don't have to put anything here.) Personality: (What your character is like to be around, how they think, what makes them tick... basically just describe what kind of person they are on the inside. Will probably be the longest portion of your character's profile.) And now, to provide some examples, my characters (I'll be playing some villains as well, but I'll put their profiles in another post). Name: Professor Geoffrey Banks Race: Caucasian Human Gender: Male Age: 40 Weapons of choice: Very improvisational, using whatever heavy object is available. But if there's a sword handy, he'll rely primarily on that. Previous paranormal experience: None, which might explain why, even though he teaches a mythology class, he's a skeptic. Skills: Took fencing classes in grade school, and still remembers some of the moves. Also learned how to ride a horse as a child. And, of course, he's a mythology teacher and therefore knows the strengths and weaknesses of many of the creatures he'll be fighting. Appearance: Handsome for his age, but hides it well behind unkempt hair, spectacles and massive amounts of tweed. Brown hair and eyes, very pale skin. Speaks with a British accent. Personality: A bit socially awkward, with a tendency to be long-winded and pedantic once you do draw him out and get him talking. Not as hardcore a disciplinarian as his accent would suggest, but won't take any crap from students who want to be the class clown or are trying to coast through an "easy" class for a quick A. Can be very protective of his students, especially the ones he thinks will go far. Even though he comes off as a geek most of the time, there is some steel in him. Name: Princess Alira Rainlily Race: Elf Gender: Female Age: 600 (looks about 19 in human years) Weapons of choice: Two long-bladed daggers that she conjures using magic, and dual wields. She will use a bow or sword situationally, however, and does know how to kill with her bare hands. Previous paranormal experience: She's a very powerful sorceress who has seen many strange and unusual things since coming to the "Real World". Cars, for example. Those things confuse the hell out of her. Skills: Has been trained in both magical and non-magical combat since she was in her early forties. Is also very well-versed in all things relating to horses, including but not limited to riding. Appearance: Jawdroppingly beautiful, but doesn't appear to realize it. Perfect skin with just a slight hint of a tan, luxurious caramel-brown hair, pretty almond-shaped brown eyes and a well-sculpted, athletic body from all her combat training. Speaks with a slight, indefinable (in other words, not of this world) accent that gives her an exotic flair. History: After the Prophecy was given that strangers from another world would come to the aid of her own, Alira volunteered to be the one to seek them out. For the past hundred years she has been traveling between universes trying to find the right world, and now that she has she has infiltrated the school that the Chosen Ones attend by impersonating a new student. Personality: A fighter by nature due to her many centuries of military training, Alira is sometimes a bit too quick to solve problems using violence. However, she's also very much a lover... like most other Elves, Alira has a very high sex drive and is always up for it, with members of either gender. Between these traits and her general confusion about the advanced technology and bizarre cultural quirks of our world, she can come off as a bit weird. Once she finds a Chosen One, she is extremely protective of them. I'll add my fairy to this post later, gotta go for now.

I don't remember yelling at you, but I think I did give you some friendly advice at some point back in the day when you were still new here.
The first site me and Ape roleplayed on was like that too, though... you could control other characters' actions and dialogue (but you couldn't kill them off, unless they were NPCs). So it took some getting used to for me here too, and I imagine Ape will be the same way.
BTW, I'll have a thread up for you guys (well, guy and two girls) to post your characters shortly (either later on tonight or tomorrow in the late morning/early afternoon hours).
BTW, in the book series there's a second group of mythology students introduced later (with a new teacher), so if you come in late don't worry, we can find a way to work your character(s) in.

They certainly present large enough targets... centaur anatomy is very close to regular horse anatomy in that department, so yeah.
