"Yeah, it's a pity you didn't join in," Jim replied. This Magistrate was far different from what he expected. Too bad things were in a state of emergency, or this assignment could have been fun. As it was... "I guess you probably know this already, but I'm Jim Raynor, Marshal of these parts." He held out his hand.
"Besides, it's not like anyone's thrilled about being here."
Jim laughed, then grew serious. "No, I don't suppose anyone is glad to be out here. I'll cut straight to the point. We are in trouble. Several of my patrols have returned wounded or missing members, or haven't returned at all. The zerg are gathering strength. They aren't going to waste it fighting us in a long war. They are going to build up their forces, and attack. When they do, they will attack in overwhelming numbers. I'm guessing we aren't going to get any support, military or evac, from the Confeds. I don't know why you and your settlers were sent here, but whether the Confeds new it or not, they sent you here to die."
Jim grimaced. "That is the problem. We really don't have many. We can try to fight, but I doubt we'll win. I don't think the protoss will be very simpathetic, and I won't even mention asking Duke for help. I..." The radios began emitting a siren "Distress beacon activated in Backwater. Local militia under attack by unknown alien life form. Request immediate aid." Jim looked up at Toni. "Backwater! That's where most of the militia is!" The radio activated again. "This is General Edmond Duke. Just stay where y'all are. We are aware of the situation, and have everything under control." Jim looked at Toni again. "If we wait for the confederates to arrive, Backwater station is doomed!"
"Right then. You hang on tight now, we're in a hurry." Gunning his Vulture after checking to make sure his 'passengers' were on tight and that Dan and his passengers were ready, Jim sped towards the Backwater station. As something registered on his scope, he slowed down and got out his binoculars. "We should be close to Backwater now, but..." He looked through his binoculars. "What the... That ground... It looks alive somehow... and there's some kind of building that looks alive on it as well, not to mention a few zerglings." He handed the binoculars to Toni.
"What the... That ground... It looks alive somehow... and there's some kind of building that looks alive on it as well, not to mention a few zerglings."
*Toni took his binoculars and looked through them at what lay ahead. The Marshal was right... Her eyes followed the zerglings roaming about the area, wondering just what was going on. Her gaze fell on the building Jim had metnioned.* "d**n... Please tell me you have some clue as to what's happening. I mean, what the heck is that thing?!" *She handed the binoculars back to him, wondering if this situation could get any worse.*
"I don't know, but I'm guessing it has to do with the zerg, otherwise they would have eaten it. And whatever it is, it stands between us and Backwater. Let's burn it!" Driving forwards, he got within range and started firing. "Go for the zerglings first, they can fight back!"
