"I've been trying to adjust to non-island life," Jason said. "I had just gotten used enough to sirens, gunshots and car alarms so they wouldn't keep me up at night, then I go to a place with total peace and quiet and ruin all that hard work. I've barely slept a wink since." Island life hadn't really been all that idyllic, but Jason knew Karina would get his point... going back to city life was difficult.
"Aside from the whole waking up in the hospital thing, which obviously sucks, how've you been?" he asked.

"Well, not bad. My boyfriend hasn't been exactly been himself lately, and I think it was because I was gone missing for so long." She remembered how happy he was to have her back, how elated he was for the first few months, then the drinking began and it all went downhill. "He..." Karina didn't really know how to tell Jason that he used to beat her for doing nothing wrong, and yelling almost constantly. "...He just hasn't been the same."
She smiled a sad smile, but didn't want Seth's history to ruin the moment. "It wasn't easy switching over for me, either. I can remember staying up late, being startled by every loud noise on the planet." A warmer smile broke out on her face, and glanced up at Jason. "I almost wish we were still on that island, only with a house and food and a private plane. It would've been cool if all of us- me, you, and that other guy, the ex-marine, and that girl- could live there instead of here." Karina cocked her head to one side. "Don't you agree?"

"Yeah, I miss it sometimes, too," Jason said. He wasn't entirely certain he wanted to go back -- after all, he loved having internet access again -- but he got Karina's point nonetheless.
"Well, we're going to have to run some more tests to determine how badly you're hurt," he told her. "Are you claustrophobic at all?" Some people had problems going into CT and MRI -- especially MRI -- machines if they got freaked out by enclosed spaces, and he wanted to make sure Karina got some Valium or something before undergoing those tests if such was the case for her.

"Claustraphobic? Um...I don't think so. My mom says I was when I was a baby, but I've never really been in small spaces much, so I wouldn't know." She thought for a moment about all the stuff going on, and wondered how hurt she was.
"You said I have to go through some tests...How was I when I came in? Pretty bad?" She found a couple dark bruises on her arms, but saw the protruding catheter in her hand and squeaked. Thrusting her arm at Jason, she asked, in a shaky, rushed voice, "Do you think you could take this out? Needles terrify me; I can't stand having them near or in me." Karina's eyes were squeezed shut, her head turned away from her arm.

Shane entered through the door with his basketball under his left hand, as if he had stopped dribbling it right outside the door. He looked around a bit, and approached the reception.
He cleared his throat, "Uh hi, I think I need to see a doctor. I have been having cracking headaches the whole of my last semester and they dont seem to be going away... Can you... I dont know... fix up an appointment or something. I am not sure how this usually goes." He stood there ruffling his hair with his free hand, smiling.

"Sorry," Jason told Karina in a tone of genuine sympathy. "I don't like having those things in me either, but they're delivering rather powerful painkillers into your system... without them, you'd be much worse off."
He paused, then answered her first question. "I wasn't here when you came in, but Lenny -- he's the paramedic who rescued you -- told me you were pretty bad off. You're young and in good shape, so I expect you'll make a full recovery, but..." He decided to be honest with her. "Your heart stopped for a few seconds when they brought you in. Not long enough to cause any damage, but they had to use the paddles. And we think you've got some broken bones... we need to do the aforementioned tests to actually diagnose them, though. Just standard stuff... CT, MRI, the usual car-accident package. By the way, do you have any allergies?"

Lenny was in the lobby when the young athlete made his announcement. "For a whole semester?" he said. He walked over to the man. "You didn't bother telling anyone for 4 months?" He took out a pen-sized flashlight and shined it in the man's eyes. "Follow the light with your eyes. Mhmm...Okay, we're gonna go ahead and get you admitted. Follow me." He led the man to general room 106. "Okay, just got some forms for you to fill out while we wait for the MRI to open up. A doctor will be in shortly." Lenny left the room and decided to check up on his car crash victim from before.
He popped his head in on the room, where Dr. York and the patient were still talking. "Hey," he said as casually as he could. "Just checkin in to see how you're feeling."
Dr. Martin, fresh from checking on Mr. Miroki's blood cultures, stopped by the nurses station to pick up the chart for a Shane Warson, complaining of chronic headaches. "Christ," he muttered. "Another hypochondriac." He went to room 106 and saw the lad filling out the check-in forms.
"alright, son, got some headaches, do you?" He looked the boy over. "Alright, let's get ya down to the MRI." It didn't bother the Doctor that the boy hadn't finished the check-in sheets yet; there was an opening, and Seth Martin wasn't about to miss it. He and a nurse wheeled the kid's cart down to the MRI room, where a tech took him in to run the test. Dr. Martin took the time to make rounds on his other patients.

As Lenny exclaimed about the delay, he had his answer ready. He knew that would be the first thing somebody will ask. "I thought it was just a headache you know... I am just here as a precaution. The season is about to start and I don't want this to interfere you know..."
More forms! Seems wherever he went for anything, there were always forms to fill! Oh well... he thought and got down to it. As the doctor walked in and he tried to read the name on his tag but he couldn't make out much after the word "Dr." which wasn't much help in a hospital.
Before he got a chance to speak or reply to the doc's question, he was being wheeled to the MRI which he found amusing as he thought it was unnecessary. He could have just walked there.
As the doctor left, he felt the headache returning again. For some reason, it kept getting worse this time though. He didnt say anything for the moment as he didnt think the guy running the test could do much more than what he was already doing, running the test. It took some time for the test to finish. As he was being moved out of the machine, he said to the tech guy, "Hey man, did the machine screw up in there? The lights, in the machine, they went off for a minute there."
He asked because from what he had seen in movies and TV shows, he didnt ever remembering seeing the MRI with its lights turned off!

Jason turned at the sound of Lenny's voice, then looked back to Karina. "Karina, this is Lenny... he's the paramedic who brought you in. Yes, the one who saved your life." He turned back to Lenny again and explained, while waiting for Karina to answer Lenny's question, "Karina and I know each other."
------------------------------------------------------
The tech, a tall, lanky man with glasses who, because his name was Duke and he was in radiology, bore the sometimes unfortunate nickname "Nukem", looked quizzically at Shane. "You sure they turned off?" Duke asked. "Because I didn't notice anything weird on my end." He looked thoughtful for a moment, then said, "Are these headaches ever accompanied by blackouts?"
(OOC: If that's not what you were going for, then I can come up with an alternate explanation for the lights turning off later. Having a bit of a brainfart right now. Also, I will post Duke's profile tomorrow... don't have time for a long post at the moment.)

((OOC: Thanks, I was going for the blackouts. Sorry didn't make it any clearer.))
"Now that you mention it, I did pass out a couple of times recently. I just thought I was too tired from the practice..."
First he thought he would get a checkup, get a few tablets and be on his way. But now, with him mentioning blackouts, he was worried that the problem might be a bit more serious. He still had the headache which had started a few minutes back, and it was still bad.
"Actually, I have one of these headaches right now, and its killing me...", he added raising his hand to his forehead.

"My heart stopped? Oh...." She didn't know what to say for a moment, but she knew that cigarette smoke bothered her lungs if she inhaled too much. This she relayed to Jason, also explaining that sometimes they siezed up and she couldn't breathe for a length of time, so far up to a couple minutes.
She smiled at Lenny. "I'm okay. Just a little confused about what happened to me, that's all." Karina turned to Jason. "You said he was here when I came in, right?"

"Yeah, that's right," Jason said. "So if you have any questions about what's been done to you so far, he's the guy you should probably ask. Long as he doesn't mind me putting him on the spot. Oh, and about the cigarette smoke, that sounds like it might be an allergic reaction. I'm allergic to it myself, but it manifests itself with coughing and sneezing in my case." Jason had seen -- and had -- enough allergic reactions to know that allergies had different symptoms in different people, even in cases where two people had the same allergy. What caused one person's nose to run might send another into anaphylactic shock. ------------------------------------------------------ "Practice, eh?" Duke asked, trying to get Shane's mind on something else. "What sport? I played basketball in high school and college... you look like you'd be a good basketball player." It worried him a bit that Shane's headache was back already... increased frequency of episodes was not a good sign. There had been something on the scan, but he wasn't sure yet whether it was a tumor or something more easily dealt with, like an aneurysm. While waiting for Shane to answer his question, he picked up the phone and dialed Dr. Martin's pager number.

"Aw, cool! You played basketball in college too? Awesome. Actually I am in the college basketball team right now. Hey maybe when I get out of here we can have a one-on-one and maybe you can show me some tricks...?" He was glad to find somebody he just might be able to talk to about stuff he actually understood.
He suddenly remembered he hadn't introduced himself yet. "I am Shane. You are?". he said extending his hand while the guy was still holding the phone in his hand.

About that moment, a scream could be heard from down the hall. Not one of pain or fright... it was Kirika having another one of her fits. "Do not WANT!" she screamed defiantly, pushing away the tray of hospital food as the nurse desperately tried to get her back under control. Kirika hated the food at the hospital; the only good thing there was the ice cream, and she never got that. She didn't care if she was seven and acting like she was two; she was spoiled and didn't give a hoot.
The nurse tried to calm the girl down, but almost immediately got another earful of tantrum for it. Kirika wanted to move, she wanted to get out of the bed now. Were it not for the restraints, she would have. Although not usually this bad, between the mid-waist restraints and being force-fed hospital food, Kirika was a most unhappy little girl at the moment. She stuck her tongue out at the poor nurse and pouted, a sign that she didn't want that food anymore. She'd already decided that, if that nurse lady tried to feed her again, she'd bite the lady's fingers off.
Fighting the restraints again, she screamed, her tantrum reaching its limit. The nurse kept trying to get her under control, but to no avail; Kirika was tired, hungry, and cranky, a combination of moods that made her uncontrollable. The hospital food was yucky, smelled funny, and had a weird aftertaste when she did eat it; she would get her ice cream sometime soon, and she would not eat any other hospital food, even if it meant that she starved for today.
As a last-ditch effort, the nurse threatened to call Kirika's parents; that shut her up surprisingly quick, as having them down here would mean she'd get a speech. Even though she never listened, she knew her parents disliked her getting unruly, and as far as she was concerned, what happened at the hospital should stay at the hospital. Crossing her arms, she pouted again, still refusing to eat but doing so in silence...

Karina smiled again, glad she knew someone and also glad that the people here were nice. "I'm not entirely worried about the tests, but-" loud yelling and screaming cut her off, and she raised an eyebrow as the racket continued on. "What is that? Is someone getting their leg cut off?"
