"I hope eventually she'll enjoy it, but she's not used to it. She's only been with me for about 3 months."

"I suppose three months is too short a time... But I'm sure she'll grow to love it... It's hard not to..."

*Laera nodded, hesitating a moment. She tried to word her next question carefully, not wanting to bring up a sensitive subject.* "Is there a reason why she hasn't spoken a word since we met?"

((-tries to remember why she doens't talk... oh yeah!)) "She hasn't talked for years, and she hasn't said anything for the few months we've been traveling." Gareth sighed, "I left home when I was 17, and Lilah was 5. When I came back, I found out my parents had died from sickness, and Lilah was living with some friends of the family. I was told that she hadn't spoken since they died."

"Oh..." *Laera hesitated a moment, not sure how to respond to that.* "I'm sorry... I didn't realize..." *She sighed softly, shaking her head at her own inability to come up with the right words.* "Unfortunately, I know what that is like. I can understand how she wouldn't want to speak."

"what do you mean?" he looked at her confused.

*Laera bit her lip lightly, not sure if she was ready to share much of her past with this stranger. It was something that she never spoke of. She immediately busied herself with preparing a fire, turning her head away from Gareth.* "A story for another time perhaps. Let's just say that your sister and I are not so different, and we'll leave it at that." *She felt her way through the pile of wood, having a hard time focusing enough to find the right pieces to arrange for their fire. Wanting to change the subject anyway, she decided that it couldn't hurt to ask for some assistance.* "Could you help me with this?"

"sure, what do you want me to do." he stood by the fire.

"Just help me arrange the wood properly so we can get a good fire going here before it gets too dark for you and your sister. I'm sure after all of your experience with living in the wild, you know what to do." *With that, she picked up a piece of firewood, laying it carefully on the ground. After laying a few more, she searched through her supplies, her fingers finally coming in contact with the flint she was looking for.*

Gareth nodded, and set up the firewood like she asked. Afterwards, he sat down and propped his arms up on his knees.

*After the fire was going and Laera was satisfied with it, she sat next to it, her unseeing eyes focused on the flames as she thought about what Gareth had told her. Gili came to lie down at her side, content to relax in the warmth for a while. Without lifting her head to look in his direction, she finally spoke again.* "How long did Lilah live without her parents before you came back for her?"

"I'm not sure. I don't think she had any problems..." he sighed, "I think part of the reason as to why she won't speak is because I took her away. I just didn't want to split up the family after our parents died, and I didn't want to wonder all the time how she was doing..."

"I can't say I blame you. It's what any responsible sibling would do. Eventually she'll realize that." *Laera turned her head in the direction of the sleeping child, a little unnerved by how these two made her think so much of her own past.*

"I guess... If I could have stayed in our home town I would have. But I can't stand being in one place too long, so I decided to leave and bring Lilia with... hope that doesn't sound too selfish."
