Be patient, or don't and bump threads. (I happen to be a master at that.)
*Also, don't play twins! Really, there is very little that is more annoying than people who RP as twins. Its okay if you play one twin and someone else plays the other, but don't play both.
*Before joining in on an RP, read the other posts, especially the most recent, to see if people or events have changed. Its really annoying when people join in an RP and their character is out of sync with the plot and the other characters
*Along the lines of the twin thing, try not to have multiple PCs in one thread. Talking to NPCs is okay, but when you have two (or more) people controlled by you who constantly interact mostly with each other, it doesn't do much for other people.
*Use the Character Profiles! Now, in some things, it doesn't really matter, but especially in RPs where there are different races involved, please at least post your character's name, race, and gender. It's rather hard for someone to say "Elminster turned and looked at the random creature standing behind him." Its much nicer if you can say, "Elminster turned and looked at the gnome with the flute standing behind him."

Hey Raist thats not cool. I've learned to RP the twins who hate eachother thing, so if i RP twins they normally don't interact unless they're A. Trapped together, or B. Fighting. So . But i understand what you mean about the twins thing entirely, not many people RP that sort of thing in the style i take it too.

The twins I usually see in RPGs tend to be all creepy and basically share one mind.

*Use accents when you have a certain character - for example when im playing a dwarf i use
ye! instead of you! or aye! instead of yes!
It maybe text but you can give it some character too....
for example a famous quote from Star Wars
"This bucket of bolts is never going to get us past that blockade."
Now its being said by a Glaswegian
"Wuv goat NAE chance in this pile o' sh*te"
Hope this is a good eye opener.

I know I'm new to all of this here, but may I offer a protest to the multiple characters item? I've used multiple characters in many RPs before without many problems from other people, and I think (especially if I was the one leading the roleplay) that a person who can use multiple characters can flush out more of the story at once, even if they're both acting as a team quite often.
Of course I understand the annoyance of people posting twice or more just so they can up their post count, keep dragging out the story, ect, ect. However, if I'm using multiple characters (generally stick to two; three or four if the scope is large enough), I generally tend to include them all in one post whenever necessary, and they might dip in and out occasionally. This comes in handy when doing the kinds of role plays I used to be involved in, generally between two fictitious nations where one character just would not get the job done right.
Also, I know that some people tend to be self-centered jerks, making multis so they can keep themselves in the action all the time (even if they shouldn't be). If done right, though, I think multis can be as helpful as anything in keeping a storyline rolling smoothly ;D
And just to be a bit more than a nit-picker (goes along a bit with the "add more details" posts)...
*Using additional items that fit in with the storyline setting helps to flush out culture within the role play. This includes music, common items, ect, that will bring out more of the character's persona, their environment, or give clues as to where they might be. ie- you could simply state that "Mary sat down at her desk and turned some music on. A song she liked came on, so she listened to it, forgetting about the homework she had to do for the next day." - but it could be rewritten as "Mary plopped down at the desk next to her bed, turned her Walkman on and flipped through the tracks. When she came to Pantera's "Walk", she immediately put her headphones on and hit "Play". Bobbing her head to the streaming music, she used a nearby set of pins as fake drumsticks, completely forgetting about the fact that she had homework to finish for her biology class tomorrow." Same sentence, same basic information, but now we know what kind of music she likes, what kind of person she is, and just how much of a slacker Mary can be ;D
*There IS such a thing as too much information, though. Going into a Dune-like level of layered details in every single posts is overkill a la mode. Its nice to see people work, but sometimes too much is just that; too much.

Oh no, not talking about you. I was just noticing that some of the posts in this thread got to be a little bit too much about opinion and not enough about courtesy and correctness... -_- Like the multiple characters thing. I don't see a problem with it if it doesn't get too out of hand. Two or three characters at most. And twins? What's wrong with that? Blah.

Hmm... those ones might have been specifically in response to certain RPGs I was in on other boards... for the most part, my experience with one person trying to play multiple main characters was... less than stellar. Too much talking to themselves, and only to themselves.

Yeah, understandable. But some people actually know how to do it properly.

well, I can only speak for myself, but I've roleplayed twins before, and quite frankly, it was a blast :3 Especially when I had twin leaders for this one nation that were polar opposites... great times...
And if I have multis, i usually go between people rather than talk to myself... usually my single-sided discussions tend to bore even me, and we end up not talking to each other for a long time... very troublesome when the only person is yourself :\
