This is inspired by the series of fantasy novels I'm writing, the Mythology 101 Cycle (links to the TV Tropes page that I prematurely put up largely in the name of free advertising). Basically, a mythology teacher and his students find out that not only do the various fantastic and mythological creatures they've been learning about actually exist, but that the ancient sorcerer these creatures have been learning about for hundreds of years can only be defeated by this particular mythology class due to their being named in an ancient prophecy. This will contain less extreme, over the top violence and graphic, disgusting sex than the book series because Embyr Haven's supposed to be a family-friendly site... still, expect it to become fairly intense at certain points. I figured since we lack other RP ideas at the moment, and the last time I used one of my book ideas for RP fodder it went for 70-something pages in the Original Themes board, we might be able to do something with this here. Character-wise, I'd like to see the usual high school/junior college stereotypical arrangement of nerd, jock, rich kid, cheerleader, goth, troubled foster child, class clown, etc. However, feel free to subvert these however you want... the nerd can be physically powerful, the jock can be a coward, the rich kid can be nice, and so on. Also, we don't need to go with the character names listed on the TV Tropes page... that's just linked to to let you know what you're getting into. I'll be away for the July 4th weekend, so that's plenty of time for whoever cares to log in and post a comment to tell me whether this sucks as an RP idea or they actually want to do it. On Tuesday, I'll reply to everything that's been posted and start getting things moving on the RP if there's enough interest.

I actually really like this! Only a few suggestions. I haven't read the tropes yet, so sorry if the answer is there. Firstly, you're probably going to want to set a few guidelines about which mythological creatures we're using (Greek vs. Chinese) and who gets to control those characters. Also, make a few rules about having "good" mythological characters because I can see that getting WAY out of hand lol. Other than that, I think this RP could be awesome. I've already started brainstorming ideas for characters; I'm thinking druggy or alcoholic. Hmm...

...maybe. But I am most certainly not to be counted on.
That said, I read "this 10-book fantasy/Deconstruction of fantasy series essentially asks the question, 'What if Quentin Tarantino wrote The Chronicles Of Narnia?'" to my roomie. I do believe he wishes to know when/if you get the stuff published.

Hmmm...well, I'm not really much of an RPer, but I have been writing a little lately so...maybe I could give it a try? I'd hate to bog down an already-slow site with amateurish posts though.

Mostly Greek/Roman (centaurs, harpies, a hydra in the 3rd book although we might encounter it earlier in the RP) and British (orcs, goblins, fairies, etc.). I haven't learned enough about Chinese mythology yet, so nothing Chinese is in there at all... even the dragons are more like the ones in Eragon (well, they're actually more like the Bothans in Star Wars, but they're intelligent like the ones in Eragon and the physical design is similar). As far as the mythological characters that are "good", there's only two who will be going on the bulk of the adventures with the characters... an Elf and a fairy. I can put clothes on the fairy in order to make her more family-friendly, but that race isn't exactly known for decorum in the book series. But you're right, there are well over 100 named characters in the book series so it can get out of hand. Of course, probably three quarters of those characters die so it's not exactly like you're being overwhelmed with too many at any particular point in the storyline... but that many characters could really screw up an RP, so I'll keep an eye out to make sure nobody gets too carried away. Actually, that's a pretty good idea. A lot of college students are like that in real life, so it adds more of a "this could actually happen" flavor to the proceedings. Tell him I'm hoping for mid-to-late 2011 for the first book, I'm a bit more than halfway through it now so barring another bout of writer's block I should finish it within the next few months. Hmmm...well, I'm not really much of an RPer, but I have been writing a little lately so...maybe I could give it a try? I'd hate to bog down an already-slow site with amateurish posts though. You're more than welcome to join if you feel up to it, Ape. Don't worry about amateurish posts, it just means you've got nowhere to go but up. Ask some of the experienced RPers here how their first few posts looked and you'll hear some real horror stories about amateurish writing/RPing... improvement usually happens really fast, though. I was getting called out for godmodding at the beginning of my first RP, and was getting compliments on my skills by the end of it; Rosy's first RP I watched her writing steadily improve the entire time, to the point where at the end of the thread it was almost like posting with a completely different person. So by the end of this RP, you probably won't be very amateurish anymore. We all start out as noobs before we get good... don't let that stop you from trying altogether.

Eh, I'm probably back where I was when I first started. I haven't rp'd since I left Embyr Haven. And I hope you get to kick a centaur in the balls. Should be fun.

They certainly present large enough targets... centaur anatomy is very close to regular horse anatomy in that department, so yeah.

The first time I rp'd, it was on a board where anyone could control another character's actions, even if it wasn't their own. I left because this one chick kept killing off my characters and justified it by saying I didn't post enough. So when I came here, it took me a while to figure out how the system worked. I think someone yelled at me after making my first ever rp post. I don't remember who it was but it actually scared me.

I don't remember yelling at you, but I think I did give you some friendly advice at some point back in the day when you were still new here.
The first site me and Ape roleplayed on was like that too, though... you could control other characters' actions and dialogue (but you couldn't kill them off, unless they were NPCs). So it took some getting used to for me here too, and I imagine Ape will be the same way.
BTW, I'll have a thread up for you guys (well, guy and two girls) to post your characters shortly (either later on tonight or tomorrow in the late morning/early afternoon hours).
BTW, in the book series there's a second group of mythology students introduced later (with a new teacher), so if you come in late don't worry, we can find a way to work your character(s) in.

K, mine is finished. For the most part. Knowing me, something is going to change.
This should be rather interesting with two brooding students lol.
