This is the second try of the old 'Assassins Guild' RP. This thread is both for characters and discussion.
The assassins guild of Midvale, a medium-sized city, is the oldest surviving institution there. Established under a long-forgotten king to keep unruly nobles in check, it now makes money by collecting protection money from the area's nobles and, of course, paid assassination. The guild has grown immensely rich over the centuries. Besides assassins, spies and detectives it now also employs artists, scholars, alchemists, mages and inventors, and every other job that might be useful. It also offers free education to members, so they become more adept at their job, and extremely expensive education to everyone else who is willing to pay. Their building has not only meeting rooms, but also living rooms, classrooms, libraries, workshops and a museum. The ornate building is chock full of the finest art acquired over the centuries, as payment or otherwise.
The setting is: Normal Fantasy, Renaissance-Era technology, with magic. Feel free to use any imaginary piece of clockwork technology you can think of, as long as you can make up some quasi-scientific/magical mumbo-jumbo explaining why it works, and it isn't too powerful. Still, they got pretty ingenious back then - even wooden clockwork calculators were developed. And there's the Rule of Cool: If it's cool, it works, accuracy be d**ned.
Any race can be used: the Guild is very open-minded about killing.
Guns can be used, in the form of muskets and flintlocks. Just remember that they are very loud and have to be reloaded after every shot - gunpowder first, then the bullet.
Besides the technology, there is also magic.
The idea is that the characters are all members of the Guild, but if you can think of another reason for your character to join, that's fine too.
The plot (more accurately: Story Guideline) is as follows:
Far in the East, an Empire has risen. It's ruler, Archduke Cryph, has mercilessly crushed all opposition, going so far as to slaughter entire tribes.
The Elvish Ale'eno tribe was one of the affected tribes. After arrows and magic failed to stop Cryph's armies, they decided to send an envoy to Midvale, so the guild might succeed in assassinating their oppressor. Their payment: enough mithril to buy everything in the city three times over.

Hrmm... I have a longstanding character that would fit the storyline, but would not be a member of the guild. Horacius Mecrast, hes a ex-paladin. Read his profile in the Touch of Death thread profiles on this forum. I've used him before on here and it'll be easier to read there than to retype here. anorel.proboards35.com/index.cgi?board=originalchars&action=display&thread=1127I figure since he's a wanderer, it could work that he is on the same warpath as the guild, however he does not like the means. (He could be enlisted by the guild, or form a uneasy pact. That type of thing). Lemme know if it works.

Yes, the Paladin will work just fine.
I will use my old char, with a few tweaks.
Name: Hybrandt Silverfish Job: Necromancer Abilities: Making skeletons, zombies and simple undead constructs. Basic alchemy, specializing in poisons and antidotes. Simple magic spells. Can channel spirits. Extensive knowledge of the Undead. Weapon: Black-bladed sacrificial dagger, enchanted to give the victim nightmarish visions, thus distracting him if the stab wasn't lethal. Also carries a crossbow for the long-range work. Appearance: Green eyes, short black hair and a finely trimmed pencil moustache. Skinny. In the Guild, he wears a black robe with silver skulls, but 'on the road' he mostly wears a light brown leather armour, hidden by a grey shirt, with a simple grey cloak. He wears high boots of supple, dark brown leather, strengthened in places with stiffer leather. Character: The elites of Midvale and the Guild have always been much in favour of necromancy. Living in this environment has left Hybrandt a bit careless - while most necromancers would be secretive about their craft, Hybrandt doesn't see a problem with going out wearing his black robe. While his work has largely toned down his old carelessness, most of this has been replaced by pride and arrogance. Hybrandt is cowardly and vain and doesn't care who knows it. He's also an incorrigible womanizer and has tried to pick up most of the women in the Guild.
Background: Hybrandt was the family necromancer for the noble DeLuce family, and was often sent out to do 'special' jobs for them. However, he soon realized that the Assassins Guild would be much more profitable, especially with the experience he gained from the DeLuces. He has proved very valuable in jobs involving undead, and is often called upon to ensure that the souls of targets can't be recovered. Hybrandt rarely uses his undead creations for actual killing, instead preferring to use them for distraction and gathering information - he has found that a simple slow-working poison attracts much less attention than an undead shambling through the city.
EDIT: Also, I'm working on a map, since the plot will involve a lot of travel.

((Hmm, that give me a good idea for a character, the change in swytch's profile I mean))
Name: Caleb Storm Age: 21 Gender: Male Race: Human Job: Assassin/Guild 'negotiator'
Ability: High level of telekinesis powers and basic telepathic powers (can judge a person's mood but not their thoughts). He has been working on his athletic skills for the past two years and has become quite good.
Weapons: None
Appearance: While within the guild premise, he wears white robes for clothing befitting his role of a 'negotiator' of sorts for the Guild. He handles the highly distinguished and wealthy clients that require the necessary formalities when he is not out on a job. Outside, he can be seen in simple brown shirt and pants with a black cloak covering most of it in the travels with a hood covering his head. He has short black hair, blue eyes and a tall yet thin frame. He also carries some small provisions on his belt.
Attitude: He has a calm and composed persona and is unlike most of the assassin working for a guild. Seeing and talking to him, you wouldn't guess he is a ruthless assassin because of the polite way of talking. He gets along with most of the others in his guild and seems never to have any problems with anyone. He is detached and completely without compassion or mercy when it comes to his jobs though. He usually doesn't like to hurt or kill people other than his intended target unless absolutely necessary. This attitude helps him in his job as the negotiator as well.
Background: Not much is known about his childhood before he started training in a special unit for the Empire due to his powers. One year into the program, it is said that he found out that his mother was dead. He ran away from the training camp to find out if there was truth in the news. What he found out made him loathe the Empire. It turns out that after he had left his house to start his training, his mother along with others had been sold into slavery by the local deputy's office in his town.
After he had killed each and everyone one of the Empire's soldiers, he went in search of the mining camp to which these people had been sold to. It was said that he did find that his mother had died there. The slaves that were freed that day tell the story of his crushing entire buildings and burying the camp under tonnes of rubble from a large landslide he created later.
But unlike what others believe at this point, he didn't go into exile/hiding. He went back to the training camp to kill every last one of them that he had studied with. He didn't have a personal reason to do this. Right before his attack, he found out that a group of assassin, including some elites had been hired to destroy and kill everyone at that camp. He teamed up with them, providing them layout, location of the guards, timings everything. The strike that was made the next night made sure that no one in that camp saw the sunrise.
He returned with the assassin to the guild. He had been hired immediately after the job had been completed. Due to his training in the camp and his good upbringing, he was also appointed as a negotiator for the Guild by the Elders.

I was waiting for a couple of days to see if anyone else would sign up, too. I think everyone who's interested has written a char by now. The first post will be made today or tomorrow.

My character:
Name: Horacius Mecrast Age: 39 Height: 6'1'' Weight: 235 Lbs. Gender: Male Alignment: Lawful Good
Description: An aging warrior, Horacius used to be a Paladin of the Order of the Radiant Heart (more on this in history). He stands tall, his face beaten and scarred from his many battles when he was a paladin, and some more recent. His blond hair is scattered with gray. He has a face of a man who has seen much hardship, and much suffering, however there is a hidden kindness in his eyes. He carries his massive tower shield, the Shield of the Endless Night, taken from a slain warrior during his Paladin days, and his sword, an eternally aflame bastard sword, "The blade of the Red Dragon."
History: Horacius was a Paladin for many years of his life, and his power had grown beyond what any in the order thought possible. However, they began to see him as a threat, and corruption, unknown to any but those inside the order, was apparent. While Horacius was on crusade, fighting for the order, The order's leaders sent out assassins, which killed Horacius' wife and son, in an effort to crush his resolve, crush his spirit, and make he fall from the path of a Paladin. He had been on a crusade for about a year, hunting down a merciless killer. When he heard of his family's demise, he returned home, and mourned them. The order told Horacius that they would get to the bottom of the murders, but that he would not be part of it. He was a Paladin, and vengeance could not be part of what they did. He was told this, and he knew it. But as time progressed, and he continued to protect the innocent, he couldn't be distracted from the lack of progress made. On a mission to stop a pack of Wyverns that were attacking a nearby town, Horacius stopped, questioning the honesty of the order. It had been a year, and there was nothing uncovered, nobody arrested. The order dodged his questions, and he knew that he would have to investigate the murders himself. Soon enough, he learned the truth, that his own order, that which he had followed his whole life, slaughtered his family. He fought with the idea, trying to make reasons for why it could not be the truth, tortured that his own brothers of the Order would do this. However, he could come up with no excuse. Starving for vengeance, Horacius marched onto the Order's doorstep, and questioned the head of the Order. He had expected Horacius to not give up, was looking for a method to strip Horacius of his title, and expel him from the order.. Horacius was confused, and asked why he had done this. Malatar, the head, lied no more, and told Horacius that he had set out to undo him. He was causing the Order to want a lead change, and in his own fury, he had refused to allow Horacius to take his position, despite Horacius' qualification. Horacius couldn't believe a Paladin would fall to such petty acts, but he knew what must be done. Those who refused to side with the corrupted order were allowed to flee, those who fought, were slain. The head of the order, and 20 of its best Paladins fell to Horacius' blade. He had destroyed that which he had served his whole life, and it crushed his spirit. After the battle, Horacius denounced his stance as a Paladin and became known as the Fallen Paladin. Many thought him the traitor, but few found reason to harm him for he rarely did any evil. The past follows him wherever he goes, but rarely does it stay, for his actions cause others to forgive what mistakes he may have made in his past. He travels around the world, helping those in need, trying to escape his tortured past...
Notable acheivements: As a Paladin, Horacius was the only man in history known to single-handedly slay a dragon. He was 26 years old. His sword was part of the dragon's stash.
Horacius's shield was obtained when he killed a knight of the order of the Radiant heart who had fallen from the path, and was conjuring undead and massive demons. Horacius did this at the age of 28...
Horacius destroyed the Order at age 32.
Appearance: Horacius is clad in jet black armor he has worn from the day he became a Paladin, it has many marks where it has been mended from damage, however it is still as strong as the day he put it on. His shield covers him from neck to ankle, and is etched with a holy symbol, removing its demonic properties. His sword is about 5 feet long, and is constantly ablaze unless in its sheath. He is clean shaven, but has a clean cut hair-style that is often ironically, mangled and dirty because of his constant traveling.

Hello,
First, I'm very sorry for leaving you hanging this long.
A couple of weeks ago, I was having a very stressful time. So stressful, that I couldn't justify spending an hour to RP to myself.
The stress left, and I decided to spend another couple of days to 'take a break' from RPing.
Then, I slowly began to realize that, well, I just didn't like this hobby anymore. It began to feel like a chore.
That is why I have decided to leave the forum and stop RPing altogether. It just isn't fun anymore.
Do with my characters whatever you want. Again, I'm sorry.
